This biopic of punk rocker Ian Dury isn't quite as generic as some others in its genre, even if it does hit many of the same beats. 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2010)' actually rushes over quite a bit of the music creation stuff, instead favouring its lead character and his ups and downs. It doesn't glamorise its subject, even though it clearly has a lot of respect for him. Dury is brought to life vividly by Serkis, who stands out as the movie's most successful element by quite a wide margin. Despite some 'arty' filmmaking, most of the affair seems somewhat 'standard'. Its first hour is really slow, but its second moves at a much better pace. It's typically a relatively enjoyable experience, even if it isn't exactly compelling. It's a solid effort. 6/10
