"Perfect Plan" unfolds the theme of trust issues and "children of dysfunction." These issues figure in the dilemma of two winsome realtors in Chicago, Lauren and Maddie. They place their trust in a phony homeowner in the exclusive Burr Ridge Park district, who exploits them in a cash transaction for the sale of the home.

The slick con artist named Kennan Blake has impersonated the owner of the multi-million-dollar home after murdering the brother and sister, Sean and Rebecca Crawford, along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. He then hires an unemployed actress, Brenna Lakeview, to impersonate the sister. He retains Lauren and Maddie as realtors, whose motto is "experience, diligence, and integrity."

The heart and soul of the film was in the comaraderie of the two realtors. Maddie had the lively humor that raised morale after the partners lost their enormous commission. For her part, Lauren had the worst luck imaginable in losing the commission, her job, and her boyfriend, yet was tenacious in searching for the culprits.

One of the most interesting characters is the carpenter Garrett Crawford, who lost out on his inheritance, but redeemed himself in supporting Lauren in discovering the con artist. He was also a perfect match for Lauren. This romantic side of the film effectively complemented the main narrative of the scam and demonstrated that hope springs eternal for children of dysfunctional families.
