What a beautiful game

I don't normally leave reviews, but I feel like it is needed.

I've never played a horror game before since I'm 100% a scaredy-cat. So this game is my first and let me say, it is an incredible introduction to the genre as a whole. It wasn't too scary, but still left me wondering what I would encounter, making me not only use my sense of sight but that of hearing to create strategy and anticipate what would come next. With that being said, I recommend playing with headphones, as having the surround sound can really help with immersion.

The story is truly one of tragedy. There isn't any badass military man trying to save the world. It's just a father trying to save his daughter. And that makes it 100x more poignant. Despite what other game reviewers say, I quite liked the character of Ethan Winters. He's a great husband and father, a kickass fighter, and his humor and slight stupidity lends a bit of lightness to a dark atmosphere.

The environments and designs of hero's and villains alike are beautiful. And for a horror game, even the mutated versions of the four lords and Miranda have a sort of elegance and beauty.

I believe that the best part of the game was the Benevenito house. In a game seemingly submerged in a sort of "shoot and you'll be alright" style, this level created challenge, and was by far the most terrifying part due to the fact that you couldn't fight back like you could in all other parts of the game (I may or may not have started crying a little). It reminded me of the P. T demo, or what I have seen.

The only complaints that I have are that some voice lines are cheesy and uncomfortable, but I give Capcom a pass since they're a Japanese company, and Japanese tends not to transfer over to English very well. Which is understandable, because English sucks.

I truly hope that Capcom continues to create stunning games like this that are friendly to people new to the horror genre, while at the same time making a truly immersive roller-coaster-like experience.

10/10, GOTY material for sure.
