Petticoat Junction (1963–1970)

Subpar Comedy

The mom, Uncle Joe, and the three daughters, a blonde, brunette, and a redhead. The plot revolves around the elderly mom and uncle's situations, with the girls serving as eye candy scenery. They never act suggestive or sexy and all have the same personality... just background walking props. There were a few personnel changes among the actresses who played the daughters, before settling on the final three.

Why bring up the daughters? Because the opening credits of the show were changed to tantalize people into thinking they were in for a treat with sexy girls. We see the train rolling down the tracks and the three sisters peeking over the water tank they are skinny dipping in, as they do a strip tease move, yanking their dresses hanging off the side. ( Never mind that the dresses would get soaked). Then the lyrics to the chugging train: "Lots of curves you bet... Even more when you get... to the Junction... " ( Then a sexy woman's voice: "Petticoat Junction".

But there are no curvy girls... just skinny actresses acting like the female version of My Three Sons.

Then there's the sophisticated Ken Doll boyfriend who comes around on a biplane to say hi. He constantly rebukes the girls' advances, yet acts jealous if another man is around. The guy has issues.

They all reside in a 100 year old hotel bed & breakfast out in the sticks, which is only accessible via a Civil War era iron horse train with one passenger car, or a biplane. Uncle Joe is always crabby and grouchy, and mom is always flustered.

And the accordion or harmonica riffs accompanying each and every scene is annoying.

The show lasted many years because its lead ins were The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres, two excellent comedies. Great time slot. Before there were tv remotes, people were hesitant to get up and change the channel. Or maybe they thought they would see some curves.
