A bit schmaltzy....as well as inspiring and well made.

I was very surprised when I saw this installment of "The Cavalcade of America". I expected it to be a tad schmaltzy, which it was, but it also was very well made AND actually historically accurate and inspiring as well.

The show portrays events that occurred during the War of 1812. It seems that a Dr. Beanes of Upper Marlboro, Maryland was arrested by the British because he had jailed some British soldiers. What the British authorities did NOT know is that Beanes also displayed hospitality towards the British occupiers and only arrested folks who were stragglers and deserters who were stealing and breaking various laws. So, the lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key went to the British and negotiated for Beanes' release....and in the process was inspired to write what became "The Star Spangled Banner".

Overall, extremely well made and enjoyable...and essentially true! And a nice history lesson as well.
