A young man comes to work at Edward G Robinson's house hidden deep in the woods and falls for his daughter. This is the catalyst for stirring up the past and the terrible secret Robinson and sister Judith Anderson have kept for so long, linked to the 'Red House' hidden even deeper in the forest.

Enjoyable enough gothic mystery thriller which winds its way effectively to exposing what happened in the Red House. Robinson is in good form, slowly getting more deranged as the kids find out more and more, with Anderson doing very little until near the end, but doing it well. The kids are a little 'Wonderful World of Disney' on occasions and the Rory Calhoun element seems like an extraneous add on, that ends with a damp squib. Other than that the tension is maintained quite nicely leading to a satisfying and not totally unexpected climax.
