Not Great but Good

"The Great Buck Howard" was a nice movie. Steve Carell would do a similar movie in 2013 titled "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." I think "Buck Howard" was better.

Buck Howard (John Malkovich) was an over-the-hill mentalist who was relegated to playing small theaters in small towns, but you would never know that judging his persona. In many ways he was a sad case: an artist who didn't know that he was a has-been.

Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) became Buck's road manager after dropping out of law school to pursue writing. While he was waiting for the writing thing to kick off he needed to earn money and he found a job working for Buck Howard.

The movie is basically Troy's observation of Buck. Every so often Troy will throw in a narration of the events that are unfolding. Will Buck Howard waste away in obscurity or will he rise to prominence once again? That was what we were watching for. John Malkovich owns his role. He was perfectly suited for the smug, demanding, often insulting mentalist. The movie was additionally aided with assists from Tom Hanks, Steve Zahn, Emily Blunt, Adam Scott, and even Gary Coleman.
