Delhi Safari (2012)

Jungle Book Meets Pom Poko En Route to Delhi
5 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We hadn't seen any Indian animated movies so I took a chance on it, and it's, well...interesting. As several other viewers have noted, there are some scenes that don't belong in a children's movie, which just pop up out of nowhere. The animation and singing are also not great. But its magic lies in the untraditional animal characters, which delighted my children. The tiger cub is very appealing, a kind of re-appropriation of sir khan as an animal hunted by humans; the bear, like Baloo, is a lovable joker; the monkey, like king Louis, is a maniacal punk, but he redeems himself by saving the life of the parrot, the animals' only hope to save the forest from development, because he can talk to humans. They cross India, marveling at the human-made pollution, in a kind of reverse safari, repeating the environmental lessons so common in children's animation in a unique, spirited way. Given that one of our favorite restaurants right now is called Bollywood Grill, our favorite line was towards the end when the humans proclaim, "That parrot has watched too much Bollywood!"
