A Decent Pilot for a Successful Television Series
9 November 2021
This pilot episode for the television series essentially begins with a Miami detective by the name of "Sonny Crockett" (Don Johnson) witnessing the murder of his partner "Detective Eddie Rivera" (Jimmy Smits) by a car bomb while conducting a drug trafficking investigation. As it turns out, the drug dealer they were investigating had just gone into business on his own and was actually the intended target and Eddie was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The scene then shifts to New York City where an undercover detective there is shot to death by a drug lord by the name of "Esteban Calderone" (Miguel Pinero) while attempting to make a drug deal. Not long after that a New York street cop named "Ricardo Tubbs" (Philip Michael Thomas) arrives in Miami with the intention of killing Esteban Calderone for the murder of his brother. What he doesn't know is that Sonny Crockett intends to arrest the drug lord as well which creates some problems for all concerned. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a decent film for the most part which suffered somewhat by uneven acting and the typical made-for-television format inherent in a production of this type. Even so it managed to accomplish its primary objective as the television series turned out to be quite successful so all things considered it has proven its worth despite the aforementioned flaws and I have rated it accordingly.
