Betty Blue (1986)
7/10
A powerful slow burner

Warning: Spoilers
Betty Blue is beautifully shot, and the acting is raw and powerful, depicting a volatile but passionate relationship. The shared intimacy of being quite literally naked together for large portions of this film gives the two leads a more authentic chemistry than is found in most 'erotic' films. The nudity is full on and explicit throughout, but the sex scenes are not particularly outrageous by modern standards and don't come across as voyeuristic, unlike some other French films.

I enjoyed the unreliable narrator aspect of the story. It wasn't entirely clear if Betty was real, a creation of the writer's imagination, or somewhere in between. Was the cat perhaps a clever meta way of telling us things, not unlike the unicorn in Blade Runner?

A film punctuated with humour and tragedy, showing not only the ugly sides of a relationship but also the beautiful ones.
