Early Scorsese is strange Scorsese
15 February 2022
Scorsese's first ever movie is a strange one. It feels like a student film, slapdash and amateurish. Scorsese shows signs of what would become a mastery of camera movement and angle, but a lot of the material feels superfluous. It would have been better as a short movie. The movie is essentially about a relationship between Harvey Keitel's "J. R." and a woman strangely only credited as "Girl". J. R. Finds out that Girl has been raped, and handles it like a boneheaded macho moron.

Most of the movie however seems to just show J. R. hanging out with his friends, none of whom emerge with a personality and are indistinguishable from each other even at the end of the movie.

It should have focused on the relationship, and, you know, maybe given "Girl" an actual name. The extra material kills it.
