Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Clash
4 March 2022
What do Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Clash have in common? They all went pro after high school. Lebron James and Kobe Bryant need no introductions, but Kevin Clash is a bit less known. Even though you may not know his face, you certainly will know the character he voices and puppets: Elmo.

Kevin Clash was so good at his craft of puppeteering that he was hired by "Captain Kangaroo" right out of high school. His dream was to work with Jim Henson, and he would eventually get to realize that dream.

"Being Elmo" is a wonderful documentary about the voice and hands behind Elmo. I grew up watching the Muppets and "Sesame Street." Elmo wasn't my favorite because he wasn't as popular in the early 80's. I gravitated towards Bert and Ernie, Kermit the Frog, and Oscar the Grouch. By the 90's though, Elmo was all the rage.

When I was a kid I didn't know who voiced Elmo or any of the characters, nor did I care. All of the puppets provided this make-believe world that I could lose myself in as if they were real, and that's how good Jim Henson and his puppeteers were--kids like me never even thought about there being real people controlling them.

"Being Elmo" is about Kevin Clash, but in a sense it is about all puppeteers. For 80 minutes we get to tour the world of puppeteers and see how the magic works. This delightful documentary is for all ages, but beware of ruining the fantasies of those starry-eyed children.
