Review of Soul Food

Soul Food (2000–2004)
5/10
Skin deep drama.

It was a good family drama, but a bad soap opera nonetheless. Some of the storylines were too crazy or third rate politics to get a higher rating from me, and the production was too cheap looking at times. I sort of enjoyed most of its run, especially the first two seasons. The cast was great as well, and all fitted each of their parts. I didn't like the Byrd character and her husband, though. The way some characters were written, faced with certain situations, and how Teri was settled with her most mismatched love interest. But it's the lot of most dramas, I guess... The music changes and cuts, made for the DVD version, bothered me a lot too and clearly didn't give the soundtrack of the series justice enough. I liked the series finale. It was detailed and respectful to viewers who've been here the whole time, and expected a proper send off from writers. The series as a whole was trying too much to compete with other soaps, to really stand out, but I thought it was entertaining, though too often on the surface of things and with too many ideas similar to other soaps scripts. Regardless, I'm still glad I finally got to watch it.
