Blade II (2002)

I could compare this to the recent Doctor Strange sequel, in a way, in that I think both are at their best when you most feel the influence of their directors - Sam Raimi for Doctor Strange 2, and Guillermo Del Toro for Blade 2.

This isn't anywhere near one of Del Toro's best movies, but it's still an enjoyable watch. For what it's worth, I think it was quite a bit better than the first Blade as well. Action's a little stronger, the look of the film is overall better, and Del Toro's direction gives it an edge, all in all.

I feel like his style was hampered a little by the editing of certain scenes, especially early on. Other flaws with this movie include the lack of much story at all, and the way that during some fight scenes, the actors/stunt doubles are replaced with fully CGI figures, and you can really tell every time.

But to go off the negatives, the cast was better here, too, with additions like Ron Perlman, Norman Reedus, and Donnie Yen giving the film more character (the latter was a bit underused though).

Wesley Snipes is as great and cool here as he was in the first. I'm sure Mahershala Ali will make for a good Blade in the upcoming films, but the real test for the new Blade will be how it manages to get by without the ultraviolence of these original Blade movies, as Disney are pretty sheepish about blood, and these movies are about, y'know, vampires....
