There's not much backstory as Gravity dives pretty much straight into the action, but wow is it breath-taking. The combination of the set design, visual effects, cinematography, and directing make you forget that you're not actual in space. The realism in this movie is on another level. The attention to visual and audio detail is top-notch, where not a single moment in the movie takes you out of it. We are fully entrenched in the story from the beginning and hoping for a positive outcome for our own sake throughout.
There are other space movies with more layers, complex plots, or character development, but Gravity doesn't shy away from what it wants to be: a lost-in-space fight to survive movie that takes its viewers on an unbelievable journey. And boy does it succeed in doing so!
