Cyberpunk 2077 (2020 Video Game)
7/10
A Game That Just Needed More Time.
7 September 2022
So before we get started i must say that i am writing this review as someone who has only been playing Cyberpunk 2077 for the past few days, so this review will be after patch 1.5 was released. I understand people had problems with the game at launch but i will only be talking about things i experienced personally whilst playing. I have played the game in total for about 29hrs, so i have a pretty good idea on what my opinions are on the game.

So to start of with i want to get the best part of this game out of the way. The world of Cyberpunk is great, dare i say amazing. Graphically (for a game that released in late 2020) it is good, Nothing jaw-dropping. However i'm talking about the design of the world itself. The futuristic Night City is fantastic. I really felt that this was the strongest point of the game. That being said the world (most of the time) just doesn't feel alive at all. This is a disappointment as i believe (as i said previous) the design of this world is fantastic. Also on this topic, there aren't enough locations you can explore. By this i don't mean in terms of scale and/or map size and stuff of a similar nature. I am simply trying to say that i believe that for how great the design of the world is you can barely access any of the cool looking building and or locations in general. The fast food places you can't access, all the houses you can't access, any building that looks cool is most likely not-accessible and the buildings you can enter (to top it all off) feel very abandoned and/or dead most of the time. But as i said the world looks great visually, it's only when you get down to street level and start looking around the world that the world has glaring problems.

The story is fine (i guess). Not amazing but definitely passable. You get choices throughout the story and although that is intriguing and seems like a cool feature, it felt like there wasn't enough options for choices and outcomes. Now as far as i'm aware there are multiple endings (i have only completed the game once so far), but in my playthrough i don't know at what point my story could have possibly changed. But even if your story can change in my playthrough i that there were probably just a handful of choices that actually mattered and even then they didn't feel impactfully to the highest degree (at least compared to other choice based games). The story and the ending i got were fine, interesting at times and what not but nothing especially great in any aspect. Pretty average in this department.

The gameplay is fine. I really enjoyed hacking in the game and though it was done well. The options are good and the weapons choices are fine as well. Although maybe more could have been added it definitely has enough o make at least on playthrough work. This is both in terms of hacking playstyles (like i did) and a running and gunning style of play. The gameplay didn't really get boring at any point in my first playthrough of the game, however it wasn't anything that blew me away either. The gameplay here is solid but nothing to make you say WOW!

Other aspects i liked would be as follows: Handing of vehicles was great in my eyes (although i heard at launch it was bad), The wardrobe was fine (passable at the very least), the cast of characters was pretty good although nothing exemplary, the soundtrack was pretty good, perk tree was fine and Keanu Reeves.

Dislikes that aren't mentioned would include: Character customization (it was pretty mediocre and not at all what i expected), options for friendship's/romances, game crashing (game crashed twice in my playthrough), certain missions (especially the one's that involved following a target) were abysmal and overall unpolished feel of the game.

Visuals - 8/10

World - 5.5/10

Story - 5.5/10

Gameplay - 7/10

Soundtrack - 7.5/10

Although you can reply this game after beating the game once or twice, it isn't an "unlimited amount of fun" as i heard someone put it.

Overall a game that isn't at all bad and has some positives to take away, but simply needed more time to iron out the negatives.

I recommend a buy even at full price for anyone who wants to try it out, but don't expect more than what i've said.

A solid little game but released too early, 7/10.
