Rangeela review :

A. R. Rahman's first Hindi score; Rangeela became mighty popular even before its release thanks to its songs which topped the MTV India charts that year. Expectedly, the film took a fantastic opening and the public was even more pleasantly surprised by director Ram Gopal Varma's slick execution and Urmila Matondkar's splendid performance as the wannabe actress Mili.

Revolving around three main characters - Jackie Shroff as the film star Kamal, Aamir Khan as the tapori blacker Munna and Urmila as the common love interest between the two, RGV weaved an awesome screenplay full of zing and spunk with the song picturisations appearing as the cherry on top.

Rangeela is a complete feel good film quite unlike RGV's other hits which involved either horror or the underworld. Here, he was poking fun at Bollywood with the Sridevi inspired Shefali Shah asking for a 'Sitaphal' milkshake in November or Gulshan Grover playing Steven Kapoor who leaves a Hindi film midway to pursue his Hollywood dream. Hmm!!

Urmila Matondkar was simply wow and Rangeela catapulted her to the top bracket instantly. Jaggu Dada excelled in an underrated performance. Note his expressions in the climax at Maratha Mandir Cinema when Urmila leaves the premiere midway. Aamir was outstanding as the lovable tapori Munna. His antics at the five star restaurant where he takes Urmila out on a date is still so memorably funny. "AC is on, Sir", says the waiter. "Toh idhar ghumaa na", comes the pat response from Munna.

Rangeela is zingy. Rangeela is fun. And most importantly, Rangeela is simply unpretentious. Its the finest musical romcom coming from Bollywood till date!!
