There have been a number of films over the years that have centred upon idyllic looking mid-western communities of the 1950s, with something unpleasant behind the luxurious houses and well-manicured lawns. This film owes something to them, and, as the plot develops, a lot to the novel by Christopher Priest, 'A Dream of Wessex.'
What I found frustrating was that a lot of time is spent in the scene setting, and in giving hints that there's a dark mystery to be uncovered somewhere, yet the explanation, when it comes, feels very rushed, and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Florence Pugh in the lead role, does enough to enhance her acting credit, and the drama is stylishly portrayed, but I feel it would have been more effective if the pacing had been better, and more attention paid to the substance of the story.
