Review of Break Up

Break Up (1998)
6/10
An okay crime drama

As this film opens it appears that Jimmy has a loving relationship with her husband Frankie. Then we see him getting violent with her and she wakes up in hospital. When Frankie's car turns up with burnt body inside the police assume she killed him. She goes on the run trying to find the truth and a way to stay safe. It isn't made easier by the fact that she is deaf and has to lip read to understand people.

This is a fairly by the numbers thriller. It has a few twists but I doubt anybody will fail to see them coming a mile away. That said it is decent enough with some tense moments. Having Jimmy be deaf could be considered a gimmick as it rarely proved much of a barrier. The acting is solid enough; Bridget Fonda is good as Jimmy, Hart Bochner is suitably menacing as Frankie and Kiefer Sutherland is solid as Officer John Box, one of the officers looking for Jimmy. Overall not a must see unless you are a fan of Fonda or Sutherland; still it passes the time well enough if you like the genre.
