The Solomons are introduced to the concept of birthdays when Nina asks Dick what his birthday is, for the purpose of an office birthday list. Soon Dick learns about the pitfalls of middle age, when he falls for a sexy potential student (Lauren Graham of 'Gilmore Girls' and "Bad Santa") whom he is led to believe prefers older men.
He tries everything possible to look more youthful, of course, including dying his hair ("Oh my God, I'm GORGEOUS!!!") and wearing these *ridiculous* pants that produce some of the biggest belly laughs of the episode. Not to be outdone, Tommy is ever obsessed with the nature of human sexuality, while Sally is pretty full of herself as she considers her bodily perfection.
A very funny episode with a serious undercurrent - the theme of youth vs. Advanced age, and which should be more revered - "Dick's First Birthday" finds our whole cast in excellent form, with Harry developing an interest in "self-help" tapes. Graham is absolutely adorable, especially as she keeps uttering these cute laughs whenever Dick says anything remotely witty.
There is a cute moment near the end wherein Dick and Mary reveal their ages to each other, and some bonding begins.
