Review of Snøfall

Snøfall (2016– )
6/10
A great inner story, but a mediocre production
26 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show, about Selma who discovers a new world which changes her life, is a decent advent calendar for kids. It's simple, but yet mostly appealing. We get tastes of Christmas, adventure and humor, and we get to meet a lot of different characters.

The story is mostly straight forward, but that's good enough for the kids. The story's highlights are rich in content, but since it's a 24-episode show, the pace got very slow in one-fourth part of the show, which could sometimes get boring. Also, I understand the warning itself in 6. Desember that says "This episode of Snøfall can be a bit scary to watch alone. You should know that everything will be fine in the end.", but I think that's quite unnecessary because the show is intended for all children. Apparently, it might be a little scary, even if it's for a single clip or a scene, but that's why it should rather have changed its content rating instead of giving the spoiler ("You should know that everything will be fine in the end."). "Parental guidance suggested" should be the right content rating for the whole show. Yes, it's a kid's show, but I think the content rating and the content in the show don't match each other.

Onto other elements, the actors were both good, cliche and bad, but I especially noticed Vidar Magnussen's (as Winter) and Kjersti Elvik's (as Ruth) performances. They made their characters quite funny, stereotypical and interesting, and their interactions were my favorite parts of the show. Otherwise, Siri Skjeggedal (as Selma) played mostly good, Kevin Haugan (as Pil) was sometimes quite good, but also very cliche, Charlotte Myrset (as Frida) was decent, and Even Aakre (as Håkon) was alright.

I'm quite impressed by the production design, especially the town Snøfall, because it looked very good, and it was difficult to point out what were real and not. The music was good itself, but sometimes it felt too overwhelming for the scenes, which often felt like a theater play, or an obvious imitation of other movies or shows. The garden of Snøfall was a good concept, but the filter that was supposed to make it feel like a "dreamy" place, was far too strong, like color-wise, like an over-edited Instagram photo.

Back to the story, the inner story was simple, but also fantastic. I think it has a very important message for every child, and the show ended in a great way because the pieces were put in the right places.

As a conclusion, a decent show, but it could remind us of a production with a low budget.
