The Caistor, a British Trawler sets off, but after a few days of silence it's presumed missing. The son of one of the crew begins his own investigation, when the authorities seem keen to shut it down.
Spyship still ranks as one of my favourite series from The BBC, a cold war thriller, which is intriguing, tragic, suspenseful and very, very dramatic.
It's a series I could happily sit down and watch at any time, and quite often do, I have always been fascinated by the cold war, and this perfectly showcases the tactics and chess play that went on between the super powers, the main losers of course being the foot soldiers, the ordinary people.
The wonderful, haunting theme tune, A Cold Wind by June Tabor was so well received, that a commercial release followed.
There are some excellent performances throughout, Tom Wilkinson and Michael Aldridge really stand out, personally I thought Peter Eyre was terrific, chilling almost.
That ending...not many shows ended with such a dramatic, bleak moment, one of the most shocking sequences of all.
Worth your time, 9/10.
