They had me at hyper-violent fight scenes.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Kate, mononymous orphan-turned-superassassin who's over the contract killer grind and wants her own life. She's also been poisoned and has to race against the clock to exact payback.
Already you're thinking of other movies (Léon, Crank, Kill Bill) and there's no escaping that derivative feeling. But it's also got some real assets (no pun intended). For starters, it looks amazing. Osaka at night lends an anime/L. A. 2019 atmosphere, and that alone is nearly enough to set it apart.
But it's primarily Winstead, who acquits herself wonderfully as the title character. She's focused, she's hardened and she certainly meets the physical demands of the role. I got a charge out of seeing her go beast mode on a roomful of Yakuza. She's got it all covered: weapons-handling, melee and the toned shoulders to carry the movie.
I walked into this as a MEW stan, and probably just expected a lady John Wick; but it turned into a solid action thriller with a real human protagonist and some sugary sweet vengeance. You can color me impressed and I'd definitely watch this again.
