Review of Captain Blood

Captain Blood (1935)
9/10
I have many reasons for loving this movie

Made in 1935, it was one of the first movies I can recall that didn't look archaic. Decent action scenes. And great stuff of dreams for a young boy, I'm 76 and this movie is 87 years old. Olivia and Errol spark across the screen. And loathsome colonel Bishop....deserves what you just know will be his ultimate reward.

The slavery scenes were especially brutal reminiscent of the galley in Ben hur. Parts of the movie, the lighter sides almost have a Disney feel.

One of my favorite places to vacation was Port Antonio, gorgeous tree lined beaches, with the roots growing right to the waters edge. Offshore is Navy island, 64 acres, privately owned. Purchased by none other then Errol Flynn. Strangely, he never built a home there, instead preferring to live on his boat.

In my youth I fantasized about his movie making, as the genesis of his love for Jamaica.

Only later did I discover the outdoor scenes in Captain blood, like the Rathbone/Flynn duel, were actually filmed in Laguna Beach. Watching it today for the 7th or 8th time, I was struck by how perfect the casting was. Each of the characters has the patina of a fine old antique. Lastly, I recently did a genetic profile and discovered my ancestors were 75% English 22% Norweigian, so it just deepens my identification with the plight of these men.

9/10 for me. The perfect movie to watch with your kids or your sweetheart, on a rainy weekend. ENJOY!!
