I don't know and understand anymore what people (including critics) expect from shows and movies these days. Mistakenly, I read all the reviews of "boring & shallow" first, and almost skipped watching. When I actually started watching (currently at ep 4), I thought the reviews must have been written for something else. I am definitely not bored, it might be a slow burn but it's interesting, different, and to me, captivating. Jennifer Garner is totally amazing.
I didn't read the book (but I will now) - so my perception might be different- however, even then I don't imagine I'd give it one or three stars. It seems that people are so quick to condemn almost everything nowadays.
