Review of The Flash

The Flash (I) (2023)
6/10
It's a decent movie but...

The Flash is a very messy movie, filled with plot holes, dreadful CGI, and a bland story. However, it is entertaning for the most part. I have seen taglines calling it the best DCEU movie, and one of the best superhero movies of all time. It isn't, in fact it isn't even in the top 20. It would rank above WW84, but below Aquaman. It's plainfully average.

The good things about the Flash is the acting - especially by Ezra who gives a great performance as Barry. Now I will try and keep all the chaos from the actor's life out of this review, since I'm here to talk about the movie, and nothing else. Ezra is a very charasmatic actor, and it shows here through Barry. Barry is a very compelling character here, he has flaws, and conflicts which help drive his motivations. Michael Keaton as Bruce is also amazing here, despite him not having a great deal to do. Sure the action scenes involving Batman were remarkable. Seeing the 80s Batman perform that kind of hand to hand combat was a delight to see. Sasha Calle as Supergirl was.... meh. The character doesn't do that much and she doesn't have that much screentime either. She is just there. I would like to see more of her, as I think she would fit well, but overall, she was.. ok I guess.

The bad is clearly the CGI. It is awful, and I mean awful. I have read the director's comments on it, and it's nonesense. The visuals are horrific and take you out of the movie almost every time. The story is predictable and plain, but there are some emotional moments here and there. The music is generic, the cinematography is fine, but nothing special.

Overall, The Flash is average, it won't win any awards or be remembered. It was a mess, which tells me there is a much longer version out there, since it rushes from A to B.

6/10.
