An epic story, maybe not what you were expecting.
6 July 2023
General Nanisca recruits and trains an Army of female fighters to defend The African Kingdom of Dahomey.

Truly not what I was expecting, the trailers would have you believe that this is a bloodthirsty action packed thrill ride, and whilst it has its moments, it's not quite what I had in mind.

First off, I struggle to understand the one and ten star reviews, there are multiple plus points here, which I'll discuss, and sadly there are several flaws as well.

First off, credit for choosing this story, a fascinating, real life event, General Nanisca deserves her place in history as a formidable fighting force, Viola Davies puts in a great performance. The story of The Agonie is a pretty amazing one.

The visuals are incredible, the sets and costumes, the action sequences, the flawless Cinematography, all work very well. The music also is pretty much spot on.

The acting is truly on point, I've mentioned Davies, there aren't enough superlatives I can throw at her, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch are great also.

There are issues, some of the script is a little flawed, I found some of the dialogue hollow, at times it's glaringly obvious that it's a Hollywood movie,

I felt that in an effort to promote the strong female element, (don't get me wrong I applaud an action movie for not being dominated by overblown masculinity,) they dumbed down the men way too much, the men are simply cardboard cutouts.

I would have liked a bit more high octane action, but what there was, was good.

7/10.
