ASTEROID CITY (2023) **1/2 Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hang Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Grace Edwards, Jeff Goldblum. Wes Anderson's latest look at angst and anomie set in 1955 in the trappings of a play-within-a-film narrative with a collection of unique oddballs gathered for an annual science fair in a desert hamlet on the outskirts of its fictitious title involving an alien visitation, contemplation of the meaning of life and real estate values. Dry as toast and anemic demeanor thru out often dampens its loosey goosey disjointed collection of misfits and eccentrics with standout performances by Schwartzman as a recently widowed father of four and Johannson as an on-the-verge-of-depression actress who somehow bond thru their sudden quarantine.
