Can happiness and pleasure truly exist, when sadness and pain does not? A good but not excellent adaptation, of a science fiction classic...

Despite only being loosely based on Aldous Huxley's masterpiece, the key themes are explored here in this solid adaptation. It is worth your time, and not merely another "Sexed up drama", as I've seen being suggested. To be clear, sex was an important element of the plot in the original novel. However, it is handled proportionately here, and it's certainly not exploited or overplayed.

The makers have done an admirable job with this version. It is clearly aimed at a wider general audience, rather than merely fans of science fiction or serious philosophy. The dystopia presented here is not as detailed, nor as dark and heavy, as we read in Huxley's original vision. The flip side to this unsurprisingly, is a sacrifice in character development. You likely will notice some situations repeating and conversations revisited. However, I never felt it became tedious or wearisome.

The performances are strong overall, with Jessica Brown Findlay standing out as the pivotal Lenina Crowne. She capably brings both sensuality as well as a hard edge to her character. I agree with other assessments regarding the pilot episode, which is perhaps the weakest episode of the entire series. If you treat it as merely an introduction to this science fiction world, you will be rewarded with the interesting story that follows.
