Sakharov (1984 TV Movie)
8/10
A powerful film then and now that needs to be rediscovered.

Warning: Spoilers
Both Jason Robards and Glenda Jackson took on very important films exposing corruption or other controversial subject matters, and they joined forces to appear together in this film that jumped off newspaper headlines and onto pay TV where critics took notice. It's a film with a conscience that goes into deep detail over the conscious decision of real life Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov (Robards) who sees the truth and changes his ideals after his creation of an advanced hydrogen bomb, exposing government oppression of the Russian working class.

With Jackson co-starring as his wife, Robards fights against a mighty machine and faces banishment, and it appears that there's no way he can win. But the essays get worldwide attention, and it's only a matter of time before his whole story goes international. I recall seeing this on home video early on at rental stores, but it's one of those movies that seems to have vanished. Robards and Jackson are thrilling to watch together, even though the subject matter is quite depressing. A strong supporting cast, excellent script and terrific direction makes this a timely drama that stirs anger against bullying and corrupt governments.
