A tough watch, of an important film

This was a very difficult movie to somehow rate, there was nothing about this movie that was enjoyable, it was a real labor to sit through, but I felt like the movie really had a lot to say. Part of what the movie had to say is the fact that parents always take for granted the assumption that they are going to give birth to a healthy child who's going to grow up to be a normal human being. As we know that is certainly not always the case. Are the parents to be blamed, is it a genetic malfunction, is it America's glamorization and adoration of weapons and violence? What exactly is it?

Great performance by Tilda. Also, the son was great at playing a pitch black character. One thing I do know for certain, a movie like this makes me incredibly grateful that I chose to never have children, because one simply does not know what one is going to get, and I think that's part of what this movie is all about. You can raise a monster without necessarily being a bad parent, though to some extent the father did share some blame here, as he was completely oblivious to his son, he had a total blind spot for the madness of this young man. The mother knew he was a bad egg. But, she tried. What a story. What a life.
