Mayhem fans are too hard on this film
17 September 2023
I love "based on a true story" films. Although they arent 100% accurate, they give a exaggerated story. After seeing this film I tried to find as much truth to the story as I can, and found out quite a lot is true. If you look at this film just as a film it is great, im sure the fans of Mayhem will disagree.

This film is very dark wouldn't say it is a horror though. It follows the rise of the black metal band. I love films that give me chills and truly make me question their actions. In this film, from taking pictures of "Dead" after he blew his brains out to the brutal ending, it displayed people that are so invested in their craft that it made them do shocking things.

During the film we see them burning down churches and make jokes about jesus' disciples. The main character in the film actually wanted to be "jesus". As he was always referring to the band as His and wanted to be the leader. All his other members of the club were like his disciples. There was a connection between the arson and him being the face of the band and god.

Im not the biggest fan of metal music but the soundtrack for this film is amazing. It gives out dark, hellish emotions just like the film does.

I like the slight comedy undertone in some scenes, gave it a refreshing feel and displayed behaviour that would be expected from the band. A more comedic metal band film "The Dirt" is also a great based on a true story film.

The acting is solid in this film with each character providing the main cast with character development throughout.

The horror elements in this film aren't great. I wouldn't say this film is a horror film. It shows gore elements in some scenes and features a repeating horror sequence with the vision of "Dead" which worked really well and had a jumpscare hidden which startled me. But all in all I'd say it is more of a drama/ maybe thriller than a horror.

I wasnt sure what to expect from this film, I saw this recommended after I watched "The Dirt". I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Really dark, great story, great cast, the style of the film was great, each time they took a photo a polaroid shows up loved that.
