The Yogi Bear Show (1961–1962)

Smarter than the Average Bear!
17 October 2023
I'm a diehard Hanna Barbera fan, and Yogi Bear is my favorite cartoon of the HB bunch! Most of the HB cartoons are from decades before I was born, but most of my family members who were born a generation or two before me watched them when they were kids, and I was introduced to them through reruns on both Cartoon Network and Boomerang, including this one. A lot of the shows I like are way older than me but most of them have been popular with both kids and adults for generations (including this), and some of my favorite cartoons are from my time. I like some modern shows but not an awful lot. I have a few Yogi Bear videos, a Yogi Christmas book, and Yogi and Boo Boo plush dolls. When I was either 3 or 4 years old, I made up a Yogi Bear song and sang it a lot back then. I still do once in a while, and I still remember all the lyrics after all these years. This is one of many Hanna Barbera cartoons that has colorful and very detailed backgrounds, a catchy theme song, characters with distinctive personalities, appropriate background music, clever humor, and smooth animation. What else do I like about it?

This is also one of the most quotable HB shows. It has a lot of memorable lines, like "Pic-a-nic basket," "Hey, hey, hey!", "Hey Boo Boo!", "I'm smarter than the average bear!", and more. "Pic-a-nic basket" is more fun to say than "picnic basket." I usually call them pic-a-nic baskets because of that. When I was in high school, I'd say I was smarter than the average teen a lot because I was extremely smart and mature for my age, just like Yogi always says he's smarter than the average bear, and my friends and family would always agree with what I said.

My favorite character is the title character, Yogi. He has a laidback attitude, a distinctive, deep, and silly voice, a large appetite, and he makes catchy rhymes in nearly every sentence, which gives me slight Dr. Seuss vibes. Like he always says, he's smarter than the average bear! The idea of bears only stealing actual food is better than the idea of them eating humans. I know that stealing is wrong, but this is a cartoon, and Yogi never gets away with his actions. That, and he and Boo Boo are more mild-mannered than most bears and thieves. Even though they're thieves, they're also heroes!

Overall, Yogi Bear is a funny show. Nearly all the HB cartoons are pure fun, very, very funny, and totally wacky, and this is no exception. What's not to like about them?
