A Crush on You (2011 TV Movie)

Fun Hallmark rom-com

I found this movie to be a fun, enjoyable rom-com. Of course, not much new ground was covered here. This movie is basically like an amalgamation of "You've Got Mail" and a lesser-known 90's rom-com called "The Truth About Cats and Dogs". It was a Hallmark TV movie, so the production standards weren't quite as good as a cinematic release, but given TV movie parameters, it was pretty good.

I thought all 3 actors in the love triangle gave good performances. Brigid Brannah as Charly was great, portraying sincerity and vulnerability while at the same time being cute and appealing. She's a very beautiful woman, who could as easily have played the part of the really hot girl Chloe, but she succeeded in portraying the more down-to-earth, girl-next-door type. Sean Patrick Flannery did a great job portraying the good guy and lovestruck, hopeless romantic Ben. Christine Scott Bennett was successful in making the gorgeous woman Chloe seem both likable and approachable.

I liked how Ben had a lot of interaction, both with Chloe and Charly in real life, as well as anonymous online interactions with Charly. Honestly, the plot would have been fine without the whole online element. Ben's IRL interactions with Charly were much more substantive than any of their online interactions. Obviously, you knew that Ben would eventually end up with Charly, and that she was the better match for him, but I liked how they didn't make Chloe an obvious bad match. Ben and Chloe also connected on some level, and it was clear that Chloe appreciated that Ben was a good guy, and different from her other numerous suitors who were solely attracted to her for her looks. Chloe was not a stereotypical dumb blond. She had some substance and she was a sincerely nice person and good friend to our heroine Charly. I liked how all 3 characters had some depth to them. The relationship between Ben and Charly's son Luke was also a nice addition.

Okay, so the plot had some kind of ridiculous elements. The fact that he ends up emailing the wrong girl, based on the difference between surnames Anderson and Andersen was a bit of a stretch, especially since Chloe specifically mentioned that her name was spelled with "on", and Ben actually wrote that down. Also, why, in their email conversations, would they not provide each other any details from each other's lives that would allow them to deduce who they were really emailing, or at least clue Ben into the fact that he wasn't emailing Chloe? And when Ben and Charly decide to meet in person, why were there no arrangements made for them to realize who each other was, such as wearing a specific article of clothing? These and other details are things which a more polished script would have dealt with much more believably.

On the whole, this was a very nice rom-com, with decent performances and likable, relatable characters. There were some rough spots, but nothing so major that they took away from the overall enjoyableness of the story. Definitely worth a watch.
