Everything in this film gives off a slight sadness: muffled rhythm, affected faces, low lights, depressed piano. Soft, featureless production.
The choice of tone could however have been different as shown by the few amusing elements in the deadpan treatment of the subject at the beginning of the film, but all this quickly fades away.
It ends with a morally dubious and somewhat cowardly conclusion that chooses to emphasize the fact that Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed are actually starting their relationship and leaves Buckley's husband, James Allen White, completely out of the equation. Quite unpleasant.
