Rare Exports (2010)

Great concept which was poorly executed
3 December 2023
Whole films idea is pretty great. Dark origins of Santa being a demon instead of a fat man delivering present. I wouldnt say this is even a horror, it only features some horror aspects. As well as its 15 age rating could be easily dropped down to 12 but you do see a lot of santas elfes, which are old men naked so thats why its a 15. Apart from some nudity the film doesn't feature any other gore, horror or even jumpscares. All kills happen off screen apart of one axe to the head where no blood or any sort of injury is visible.

The story is great, kid that lost his mother saves the day. Unfortunately the plot was easily predictable. And I didn't feel like the kid suddenly coming up with a great plan is a good ending, maybe if he was a little older, he seems to be 10 maybe 12 in this film. Throughout the film the kid is quiet and shut down by his dad. In the most chaotic point in the film all the adults lose their authority and kid has to step up, didnt really work for me.

The aesthetic of this film is beautifully shot in Finnish mountains, the scenery is very well done, and the little cgi it had was good.

If they were to make a remake with the same story concept I would 100% be tuning in as I loved the story of a evil Santa that kills the kids instead of being someone kids love.
