Biggest Disappointment of 2023
1 February 2024
This was an extremely disappointing series. I was so excited that Percy Jackson was coming back to the screen in a more faithful retelling. While that may have been true compared to the movie, this show was disappointing in so many other ways. The lead actors had poor chemistry. The action was too little and too poorly choreographed. The entire show was rushed. The dialogue was extremely clunky. While the overall show was more faithful to the books, some changes were so poorly made. The biggest example for me is when Percy and Annabeth go on the love ride in Hephaestus' amusement park. In the books, their attacked by mechanical spiders and pretty much have to fight their way out of the park. This was changed in the show, and at first, it wasn't a big deal because another thing was removed: we hadn't found out Annabeth, this fearless leader, was afraid of spiders. This was ok. Until they put in at the end of the show that Annabeth was afraid of spiders, therefore removing a great moment that shows that, even though Annabeth is great, she can't do it all on her own and needs others around her too.

My biggest complaint about the show is that they rushed through a lot of events, particularly at camp before the quest began. They didn't take time to establish characters and their relationships, so they really didn't feel important. I don't care about Luke in this show. My biggest nitpick in the show is that, when Percy doesn't know that he's a son of Poseidon and he's trying to figure out what he's good at to figure out who his parent is, he undergoes sword training with Luke. Percy gets his butt handed to him until they take a break. He sees Luke poor some water over his head, so Percy does the same, thinking it looks refreshing. When they get back into it, Percy disarms Luke on his first try. It is a really good moment that shows Luke's charisma and leadership, while building Percy up to be a son of Poseidon with potential to become a great warrior.

All this said, I hope we do get a season two. Hopefully they can create longer episodes so they aren't rushed and the director is able to clean the show up in almost every area.
