Review of Theri

Theri (2016)
6/10
Simple mass entertainer. Keep your expectations low.

'Theri' is a regular mass entertainer that follows a predictable path and might just disappoint you a bit if you go in with huge expectations, like me. I watched 'Mersal' and 'Bigil' before this film, both directed by Atlee and way more superior to 'Theri', and because of that I couldn't enjoy this film as much as I wanted to. This movie follows the standard pattern of an Atlee film and also a number of other Tamil films but doesn't have as much depth or layers in its screenplay as I was hoping for. It's an entertaining film for sure but don't go in expecting a 'Mersal'.

The movie starts off really well and the all the scenes involving Joseph and his daughter Nivi make for a delightful watch. The child actress who played the role of Nivi has done such a beautiful job that if an entire movie dedicated to the friendly banter between Joseph and his daughter is made, in my opinion it would be truly worth watching. The charismatic screen presence of Vijay and Samantha definitely added a lot of weight to every single scene of theirs. Vijay may not be a great actor but he knows how to steal the scene with his swagger and on the other hand Samantha portrayed her character in the most realistic way possible. Amy Jackson didn't have a lot to do in the film but she did look gorgeous in every single frame. Rajendran's comic timing was also on point and his scenes with Vijay were quite funny.

'Theri' is yet another vigilante thriller but it falls short in its screenplay department. Movies like 'Sivaji', 'Indian' or 'Nayak' have explored similar topics in the past but they were much more enjoyable to watch in comparison to this film. This movie too has some good messaging but that is not enough to save the film from being called mediocre. Songs of the film are average at best, I didn't feel like going back to any of them after finishing the film. Cinematography of the film is of top quality, every scene looks extremely beautiful. The action sequence at the beginning of the film is very good but the rest of the film is unable to match up to it. Actually the initial fight sequence between Vijay and the goons at his house is the point where the movie starts losing some momentum. It's a one-time watch kind of film, you won't really feel like going back to it again.
