Review of Poor Things

Poor Things (2023)
3/10
Comedy?
27 February 2024
I went to see this movie as I was led to believe it is a highly rated comedy, however, don't expect the kind of "milk out of your nose" explosive laughter. Instead, it is simply unusual, which is in a way part of the definition of comedy I suppose.

There was not a single laugh heard in the audience when I saw it in the theater. And what could have been funny instead appears more grotesque and weird. Like animals walking around with bodyparts from mixed species.

Instead of a comedy expect more of an art project, full of political metaphors supporting trending political movements. It is truly very different from most mainstream movies in its form, and it clearly has a very high production value. Great cast, great acting, interesting storytelling that explores some new grounds.

But about the story, it tries to be different but it is trapped in its own mundane message it works so hard to convey. It wants so bad to be controversial, instead it just delivers the same ideas we have been hearing over and over in new mainstream movies, mainly about empowering women.

No issues with this message, I have just seen this movie before, many times, and it is simply a checkbox everyone wants to tick off these days. That checkbox does control how the story can play out though. And what fun is a movie when it is so deeply trapped in cliches you can play it all out in your mind before you see it happen on the screen? The new wrapping is interesting and shows some artistic touch, but is overshadowed by the lack of original ideas for the story itself.

Normally I would not be so critical to this aspect, however, this movie is presented as something truly original and thought provoking. But, it is in its core just presenting old and worn out ideas designed to trend with todays mass audience.

The movie format has some kind of old school format, with black and white 1/3 of the movie. And it is clearly.inspired by those old movie styles. If it was released in the 1960s, where it seems to have some inspiration from, it would have hit its mark with trying to be controversial and original.

All in all, worth seeing for the artistic visuals, high production value and acting, the story did not drag me in though and it felt too long and predictable in the end.
