Review of Hell Nurse

Hell Nurse (2022)
8/10
Eighties Glory Trash Cinema
7 March 2024
At first it feels like a clumsey throwback that uses grit and grime to hide flaws of a low budget but eventually i realised a lot of interesting depth to the film and film makers style. Then I found myself replaying parts to see if I'm seeing what I think im seeing and the answer is a resounding YES quite a lot of hidden goodies in this almost as if the eighties plot is more of a ruse to hide all of the alternative meanings and sub plots. Is defiantly intended for a niche audience a little more retro than the kind of trash cinema I love but the violence and protagonist's redemption make up for the lack of humor I expected in this kind of film. There are some very gruesome and hard to keep eyes open moments in this if you have aversions to sexual mutilations or taboo subject matter like religious SA and nearly x rated content. The extreme nature is kind of camoflaged by fine cinematography and dramatic scenery. Every shot feels carefully composed to and gives a more professional feel than a typical grind house trash film all though some kind of effect was added to give the film a retro feel as well or an old camera was used. Admittedly jealous of the hell nurses boobs *heart* What I do not like about the movie is the priest character and some of the middle part could have been edited down. Some of the acting is not good but also fits to the movies style so Im on the fence of calling that out or giving the benifit of the doubt as intentional and appreciating the authenticness.

I cannot overlook the fact that this is a horror movie with a black female lead character, which may rub a lot of people wrong in the currant landscape of society but I really love seeing this and hope to see more companies following suit. Solid 8 for me and will be watching for a part 2 because this story doesnt feel like it's over.
