This has several poignant moments. The whole trick or treating thing shows the absolute chaos the family has to deal with for simple things. Each child's hopes and fears come to the fore. Randall, of course, creates a map, showing which houses gave what the year before and he creates a pattern to attack the more lucrative. Kate wants a certain boy to hold her hand in the scary house. Kevin does something nice but wants to go with his friends. Meanwhile, Beth is about to give birth to her first child and that becomes chaotic. We also see older Kate having a brief fling with a married guy. All these have degrees of sadness in them.
