The logging industry has always been fascinating to me, watching these huge round rolling pieces of wood heading into the water and down to where they're collected to go to factories, either for paper or for lumber. There have been many movies made on the subject, making the "northern" a subset of the western genre and visually fascinating.
This entry reunites Richard Arlen and Andy Devine for one of their more than a dozen pairings, although initially they are on opposite sides. Land owner Linda Hayes is selling lumber off her property, and Arlen warns her about agricultural issues regarding the cutting down of trees. She has a contract with Willard Robertson, a ruthless lumber company owner who resorts to violence to fulfill the order. Devine is initially on Hayes' payroll but joins forces with Arlen when Robertson goes too far
In most of the films that I've seen with Arlen and Devine, I've found Devine far too over the top and extremely annoying. But here the focus is less on the comedy and more the story so he is much more subtle than normal. The results are a decent B Universal action film that at only an hour flys by and keeps the viewer intrigued. Much of the film is set at night outdoors so the photography is a bit dark. The action highlight is Arlen rushing to get out of the way of a rolling log, seemingly pushed in his direction.
