Has some nice moments
rbverhoef23 January 2004
The Three Stooges are tree sturgeons and they have to take care of a tree that belongs to a sick and grumpy old man. Larry, Curly and Moe think the tree needs a girlfriend, another tree, and the man promises to give each of them 10.000 dollars if they bring a tree. The problem is that the tree only grows on an island where the natives live in houses made of bamboo and where they drink milk from coconuts, as it says in this short.

This short as a complete thing is not very good, but the separate parts both have their moments. Especially the part on the island with a gag involving a alligator is terrific. This is not their finest short, not even close actually, but as always it is entertaining enough.

double negative
SnoopyStyle8 April 2021
A rich crazy old coot has recently bought a rare puckerless persimmon tree and keeps it in his room. He calls for tree surgeons and gets the Three Stooges, Larry, Curly, and Moe. Moe claims that the tree needs a mate to bear fruit. The old man offers them $10 to bring back another tree from Rhum Boogie.

It's weird to have a white family lead a cannibal native tribe but somehow the double negative cancels each other out. The stupidity of it makes it fun. If it was me, I wouldn't get that close to an alligator. The alligator is a good bit. I like the ending although I kept expecting the water bailing to magically refloat the boat. If they could do that, it would be better.

It's a wedding or the stew pot
bkoganbing14 July 2014
I noticed that Some More Of Samoa was released three days before Pearl Harbor. Soon enough the American movie going public would be inundated with films about the Pacific War and enough films showing a less humorous view of the South Seas.

But in this short subject we have the 3 Stooges now in the profession of tree surgeons. That's like giving the job to a professional arsonist.

However a millionaire client whom they persuade that his rare tropical tree deserves a mate sends the boys on a trip to the South Seas that they make by row boat.

They can get a tree, but the chief's ugly sister likes Curly and he has to marry them. Otherwise the boys are the main ingredient in cannibal stew.

A bad dilemma in this funny short subject.

'Cheer Up. We Kill Or Cure' - Curly
ccthemovieman-117 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This story has a silly premise but it makes for different kinds of jokes and sight gags, and many of them work.

We first see the Three Stooges as tree surgeons. The sign on their door reads, "Painless Tree Surgeons - the Biggest Grafters in Town." The jokes aren't all that great but there are some good special-effects as a big needle full of Vitamin juice makes a tree suddenly grow and sprout fruit. Later, Curly gets stuck with the needle and grows into a giant!

Then, they get a call for some business. A somewhat demented and ornery old man won't come out of his room, upset that his ailing persimmon tree isn't getting better. The tree is in the room with him. A funny scene ensues when the old man's nurse and caretaker are chased outside the room and then assume the boys are chopping off the man's leg, when it is really only a limb off the tree. The old geezer's howling at the right time will make you laugh out loud!

The boys assignment involves traveling to a far away island to find a "mate" for the "puckerless persimmon." They figure that's the cure for the ailing tree. They wind up on the island of "Rhum Boogie," which kind of tells you how corny this Stooges short is, for the most part!

The scenes at Rhum Boogie are hilarious, highlighted by Curly becoming king one minute and being cooked for dinner the next.....unless he marries the real king's ugly daughter. The cannibal skit is funny and so is the extended scene with the boys trying to get the small tree out of an alligator's stomach. This is just one gag after another and is terrific Three Stooges material.

A Few Laughs Along the Way

Some More of Samoa (1941)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

The Three Stooges play tree surgeons who are offered a job by a crazy old man who is in love with his special tree and wants the boys to find it a mate. The Stooges head off for a jungle where they find the tree but with it are cannibals and an alligator. SOME MORE OF SAMOA isn't a classic and there are many dry spots throughout it but there are enough laughs scattered around to make it worth viewing. If you're new to the trio then it's best that you don't start here since it really doesn't show the boys at their very best but fans should get enough laughs out of it. I think the highlight of the film comes towards the end when the tree falls into the mouth of an alligator and the boy have to find a way to get it back without losing any of their limbs. The scenes with Curly attempting to get it back are quite funny as are the scenes where the cannibals are about to cook him after he refuses to marry the chief's extremely ugly sister. The first half of the show is pretty much misses in regards to laughs, although the surgery sequence with the old man got a few chuckles.

One of the greatest Three Stooges shorts!
Movie Nuttball28 July 2004
The Three Stooges has always been some of the many actors that I have loved. I love just about every one of the shorts that they have made. I love all six of the Stooges (Curly, Shemp, Moe, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe)! All of the shorts are hilarious and also star many other great actors and actresses which a lot of them was in many of the shorts! In My opinion The Three Stooges is some of the greatest actors ever and is the all time funniest comedy team!

This is a very funny Three Stooges short. The doctor scenes are very funny. Symona Boniface acted very good. Mary Ainslee and John Tyrrell were very good! All of the Samoa scenes were extremely funny especially the guard who guarded the plant. The King, The King's Sister, and Kingfisher are three hilarious characters in My opinion! This is a great one and strongly recommend it!

Jungle Stooges
Horst_In_Translation11 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Some More of Samoa" is an American short film from 1941, so this is already over 75 years old and those with a knowledge in this time film-wise will maybe immediately realize when reading the name of director Del Lord that here we have another 3 Stooges short film. It runs for slightly under 17 minutes and is from World War II, but still from before the Stooges really got political. Instead they are on a professional trip to the jungle here that almost ends with them being eaten by a local tribe. Like all the other Stooges (short) films, this is a black-and-white movie and the play on words in the title is pretty typical for the trio, even if the title itself not really is. All in all, I did not find this one too funny I must say or interesting. It's another of their works where the decision against color really hurt the looks and entertainment factor, especially in the second half. The latter also included the biggest letdown, namely the crocodile scene near the end that honestly looked so cheap that it was painful and cringeworthy too watch. And why the hell did they make it so long. Another example of where the writers really messed up as I believe the trio is fare more talented range- and comedy-wise than they are allowed to show us most of the time. This is a prime example how one of their films is destroyed by horrible writing and even worse set decorators. Watch something else instead.

"The Biggest Grafters in Town"
slymusic27 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Del Lord, "Some More of Samoa" is a convoluted, yet fairly entertaining, Three Stooges short starring Moe Howard, Larry Fine, & Curly Howard. As tree surgeons, the boys are assigned by a persnickety old man to find a mate for his puckerless persimmon tree. So they travel to the Isle of Rhum Boogie, where trouble awaits them!

Here are the highlights from "Some More of Samoa" (but watch the film first before you read any further). The Stooges answer the elderly gentleman's house call and declare that they need to operate on his puckerless persimmon tree; both the man's wife (Symona Boniface) and a presiding nurse (Mary Ainslee) believe the Stooges to be people surgeons, so the two women react accordingly when the Stooges prepare to cut off a couple of (tree) limbs. After bumping into a dangerous Rhum Boogie native, Larry & Moe break into an amusing "Amos 'n' Andy" routine. In the end, the Stooges try to escape the cannibalistic island natives via their sinking canoe.

As entertaining as it is, "Some More of Samoa" has a few interesting oddities. First, Curly accidentally injects himself in the posterior with Vitamin P.D.Q., a serum that he invented in order to "make big trees out of little saps"; Curly ultimately grows several feet taller from the transfusion! Second, Curly has to reach into the mouth of an all-too-obvious fake alligator in order to retrieve the mate for the puckerless persimmon tree. And third, I don't believe I have ever heard of anything quite so unappetizing as Roast Stooge!
