Less bleak than Anthony Mann’s westerns with James Stewart, including Winchester ’73 and Bend of the River, The Tin Star still wastes little time sketching an unwelcoming vision of the Old West. It begins with bounty hunter Morgan Hickman (Henry Fonda) riding into a small town with his latest deceased prize in tow. The townspeople gather around him in the street like pigeons, though the open hostility and disapproval in their faces undermines the sense that they’re in any way titillated by the sight of a dead body or a grizzled gunslinger. Forced to wait for the paperwork to clear for his payout, Morgan settles in for a few days of frosty reception that the townsfolk extend to any outsider, including those within their community who violate the narrow-minded boundaries of accepted behavior.

Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

Friday the 13th star Betsy Palmer has died at the age of 88.
The actress was best known for her performance as killer cook Mrs Voorhees in the 1980 horror film and its 1981 sequel.
Her manager Brad Lemack informed The AP on Sunday (May 31) that she died of natural causes at a hospice in Connecticut.
In addition to her most famous role, Palmer appeared in TV dramas like Kraft Theatre, Studio One and Murder, She Wrote. She also appeared in The Long Gray Lane, Queen Bee and The Tin Star on the big screen.
Palmer was also known for her Broadway performances, and appeared in several plays during her long career, including Same Time, Next Year and Cactus Flower.
Looking back on Friday the 13th in the years that followed, Palmer was not afraid to share her true feelings about the film, describing the script as a "piece of junk".

Veterans Day movies on TCM: From 'The Sullivans' to 'Patton' (photo: George C. Scott in 'Patton') This evening, Turner Classic Movies is presenting five war or war-related films in celebration of Veterans Day. For those outside the United States, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which takes place in late May. (Scroll down to check out TCM's Veterans Day movie schedule.) It's good to be aware that in the last century alone, the U.S. has been involved in more than a dozen armed conflicts, from World War I to the invasion of Iraq, not including direct or indirect military interventions in countries as disparate as Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. As to be expected in a society that reveres people in uniform, American war movies have almost invariably glorified American soldiers even in those rare instances when they have dared to criticize the military establishment.

Now that’s more like it. Much as the slow start to Banshee’s second season has had me pining for the days it would just do one-off episodes (like last week’s enjoyable British invasion), “Ways to Bury a Man” is the first time since the tail-end of season one that it’s felt like all the stuff surrounding the procedural escapades is cohering into an exciting whole. This time last year, we had the episode “Wicks,” a fine enough bit of backstory-fill that was ultimately self-contained. A year later, with a slew of new characters and dynamics set up, Banshee is finally at the point where its main plot can begin in earnest: a war between Hood and Kai Proctor that’s going to smash a semi through what little veil of normalcy this town had left.

Laudable as it is to try to bring to people’s attention some splendid films which they may not have seen, it can swiftly deteriorate into, “oh gosh, you haven’t seen Cube: Zero, what kind of film fan do you call yourself?”.
So the criterion here is not obscurity, nor necessarily five-star classic status, rather this is an effort at a simple introduction to a handful of rarely seen and perhaps under-appreciated films that you might want to catch when and where you can. Anthony Perkins made his film debut in The Actress (1953) in which he received the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year and three years later he received an an Academy Award nomination for his second film, Friendly Persuasion (1956).
