Cinema purists may be loath to admit it, but there are certain advantages to streaming a movie over going to a theater. You’re in the comfort of your own home, for example. So when you’re watching a film like “Me Time” and you feel like walking out, there’s no shame in that. You don’t have to get up and gather your things and excuse yourself in front of a crowd. You can just press a couple of buttons and watch “Bridgerton” instead.
That may sound like a burn but, to be fair, the characters in “Me Time” would also rather be watching “Bridgerton.” Fifteen minutes into this Netflix exclusive, Kevin Hart and Regina Hall, who play the married couple Sonny and Maya Fisher, get into an argument because they were supposed to watch the Netflix exclusive “Bridgerton” together. Instead, she watched it with someone else on a business trip.

Another year, and another daunting challenge to keep up with the number of streaming options available from the big online players. And to mark January 1st, there’s some new content to enjoy on the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus and HBO Max, among others, as well as several notable changes in licensing agreements that may affect how you can watch your favorite shows.
On Netflix, the biggest fresh release is the third season of Cobra Kai, which has been a hit for the service since making the move from YouTube. Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. Other highlights, meanwhile, include Netflix documentary The Minimalists: Less Is Now, and a lot of licensed movies ranging from Bonnie and Clyde to Goodfellas.

So long, 2020, 2021 is here! Now that we’ve entered the New Year, the various major streaming services are starting January with a bang as they all have hefty hauls arriving this weekend. The first day of the month always sees a load of newly licensed titles go up across the platforms and that’s especially the case in January, as Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video have tons of great new movies and TV shows debuting this weekend.
For starters, there’s something for all tastes becoming available on Netflix on January 1st. We’ve got Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, animated comedy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, both Sex in the City movies, Superbad, Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon, horror flick Gothika and not one but two films directed by Martin Scorsese, Goodfellas and The Departed, featuring DiCaprio again.

It’s finally time to start shedding off the terrible year of 2020 and begin thinking positively about 2021, and Netflix is making that fairly easy by starting the new year off the right way. With its first content drop of the month, the world’s most popular streaming service is proving how it got that title with a massive selection of movies and shows that are certain to tickle the fancy of subscribers looking for new stuff to watch.
If you’re a fan of Robert Downey Jr., today is a really great day for you, as the prolific actor has had two additions added to Netflix in a single drop. His 2009 take on the world’s most popular detective can be seen in the simply-titled Sherlock Holmes, and you can also catch him as a doctor in the 2003 supernatural thriller Gothika.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

The deforestation of the Amazonian rainforest has been linked to a disease without a vaccine.
"Illegal logging and pervasive wildfires are just a couple of the dangers facing the Amazon rainforest, a global bed of biodiversity and carbon sequestration. The consequences of this deforestation are as local as rising temperatures in Brazil and as distant as blooms of Sargassum seaweed in the Virgin Islands. Now scientists say we should add malaria to that list."

Almost certainly the most confrontational film about the Asian-American experience since “Better Luck Tomorrow,” Justin Chon’s “Gook” is about as subtle as a trash can smashing through a pizzeria window, but this isn’t a story for subtle times. Set on April 29, 1992 — the first night of the Los Angeles Riots — it’s not a story about subtle times, either. On the contrary, this messy but lived-in drama is intended for a climate that’s tilted towards hatred and erasure, an environment in which people are forced to scream their voices hoarse just to remind the world of their basic humanity. You don’t call a movie “Gook” because you feel heard.
A frequently angry call to action that’s shot in spare black-and-white (all the better to evoke the scrappy kind of indies that were arriving on the scene back in the “Clerks” era), “Gook” hinges on two normal Korean-American guys.

Raoul Peck’s documentary about the life and work of James Baldwin is a stunning tribute to the writer’s vital work. Even thirty years after his death, Baldwin’s words still cut to the heart of issues confronting American society. With performances of Baldwin’s writing from narrator Samuel L. Two new indie distributors injected some life into the specialty box office this weekend with two unconventional releases.
Both “Colossal” (Neon Films) and Japanese anime smash “Your Name.” (FUNimation) rode positive reviews to strong box office. With more conventional World War II drama “Their Finest” (Stx), three films from non-establishment distributors show impressive arthouse strength.

Jessica Chastain vehicle “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” shaping up to be the biggest specialty release so far this year, justified its initial wider run with a solid second weekend.
At least nine of the new limited releases this week also are available on Video on Demand. The only one to see much traction was “Alive and Kicking” (Magnolia), directed by specialty industry veteran Susan Glatzer, marking an unusual documentary presentation from Blumhouse Productions. The dance movie grossed $9000 in five theaters.

April is an exciting time over at Amazon Prime. Not only do we get a new season of Catastrophe, the service is making some of our favorite movies of last year available. Now you’ll be able to watch the likes of The Handmaiden and American Honey, both of which ended up on The A.V. Club’s best of 2016 list, from the comfort of your home. Additionally, Anna Biller’s The Love Witch—which we called “a nuanced statement on gender relations whose morals are as flexible as its formal qualities are rigid”—will also drop, although if you can you should seek out a 35mm screening of that one. Elsewhere, Amazon is unveiling another set of Bosch episodes, and a docuseries about Hugh Hefner called American Playboy.

With $88 million last weekend, “Logan” (20th Century Fox) made the case for a March box office rebound. “Kong: Skull Island” (Universal) should maintain that momentum, though not at quite the same level.
With a production cost of $190 million (double the “Logan” pricetag), “Kong” will need major worldwide appeal to justify the expense. Produced by the now-Chinese-owned Legendary Pictures, who are coming off the shaky “The Great Wall,” the new film ticks all the boxes for a hit.
It’s a massive production, familiar enough for traction but still fresh (particularly for foreign viewers), and sufficiently similar to other hits (see: “Jurassic Park” franchise). And, there’s enough intelligence in the directing and acting talent to suggest a good critical reaction. The director is Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who made his debut at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival with “The Kings of Summer;” the cast includes Tom Hiddleston, Oscar-winner Brie Larson, John C. Reilly,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out….but mostly movies.
This Past Weekend:
It was absolutely no surprise that Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie Logan would top the box office, but it actually ended up doing even better than my prediction when actual numbers came in, grossing $88.3 million over the weekend. That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening. It’s also the fourth highest R-rated opening of all time after Deadpool, The Matrix Reloaded and American Sniper.
The bigger surprise was how well Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out held up in its second weekend, not only because it was going up against Logan, but also because high-profile horror films tend...

Blockbuster season starts earlier and earlier every year – in 2017, we have made it three whole days into March before those studio tentpoles start to break ground. Heavy hitters Logan, Kong: Skull Island, Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell will get the blockbuster year off to a roaring start. This weekend brought some welcome news: Ben Affleck’s latest, “The Accountant” (Warner Bros.), came in better than expected. And though “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Universal) grossed only about half as much, they both did well compared to their cost.
But the overall box office continues to lag against 2015’s peak record numbers, dominated by such fourth-quarter entries as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a Bond film and the final “Hunger Games.” It’s hard to imagine that 2016 totals can beat them, even with Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” in early November, J.K. Rowling’s latest “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from Warners and Disney’s “Moana” closer to Thanksgiving.
The Top Ten (+1)
1. The Accountant (Warner Bros.) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 51; Est. budget: $45 million
$24,715,000 in 3,332 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $7,417; Cumulative: $24,715,000
2. Kevin Hart: What Now? (Universal) New – Cinemascore: A- ; Metacritic: 61; Est. budget: $10 million

How long since there’s been a comedian who regularly opens stand-up films theatrically? Larry the Cable Guy, Chris Rock, etc serve up sets on HBO, but when it comes to actually driving to the multiplex and paying to see a comic on the big screen, you have to go back almost 30 years to Eddie Murphy Raw and Richard Pryor before that. Kevin Hart’s sporadically funny new concert film Kevin Hart What Now? is his third to play theaters in the past five years. It was filmed in his home town of Philadelphia before a sold-out audience of 50,000 at Philly’s Lincoln Financial Field. Hart’s actual set lasts about 75 minutes, but this feature is padded out with a casino-set opening that spoofs 007 and Denzel Washington’s counting scene in The Equalizer. Halle Barry, Ed Helms, and Don Cheadle all join Hart for this mostly pointless prologue.

At their best, comedians serve as modern-day philosophers, shaping the culture by reflecting it back at audiences with just the right balance of truth and humor. It’s why the work of people like George Carlin and Richard Pryor has sustained such lasting appeal for decades. Their comedy isn’t so much a series of jokes as it is a social commentary on issues like sex, politics, and religion, all of which are at the very core of who we are as individuals and as a society. However, not all comedians aim for such lofty goals with their material, opting instead for a more observational, story-based approach. This is precisely what moviegoers are in for with Kevin Hart: What Now?

Eddie Murphy dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live Friday for a wide-ranging conversation that included the comedian's love of Good Times, his Bill Cosby impression and how he cries at the movies. During the interview, Kimmel also praised Murphy's Mark Twain Prize acceptance speech, an appearance that had comedy fans salivating for the Raw star's return to the stage. When asked whether he might dust off his famed stand-up skills for the first time in decades, an optimistic Murphy replied, "I might."

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Sometimes it’s tempting to get caught up in the past as a WWE fan. When you think back to childhood memories of watching Hulk Hogan fight for what’s right Monday nights, to watching Stone Cold Steve Austin give the middle finger to the man, it can be hard to imagine any modern WWE storylines even coming close to the “good old days.”
But while everyone will always have their favorite era of WWE, the truth is that living in the past can sometimes make you blind to greatness in the present. WWE is a 24/7, 365 day a year brand of entertainment and with that much content, they are bound to produce something excellent even in leaner years.
In fact, recent years have produced several storylines that could easily stand toe to toe with the very best WWE has ever produced. Among them, these are the very best.

Had Dean Ambrose remained Intercontinental Champion headed into Fastlane on Sunday, you could almost count on him eating the pinfall, likely from ‘brother’ Roman Reigns. It’s a rare proposition (though not impossible) that a secondary titleholder would head into WrestleMania and face the WWE Champion, and Ambrose dropping the belt on Raw in a five-way match actually adds a bit of intrigue for Sunday. For some, it lays that seed that maybe, just maybe, Ambrose could garner the title match at WrestleMania after all.
While Reigns is still the most likely victor in Sunday’s triple threat, this wouldn’t be the first time a secondary champion has dropped the gold en route to his first WWE World Championship. The modern era of WWE is littered with examples of soon-to-be marquee talents ditching a lesser belt in eventual exchange for the grand prize, and it usually doesn’t take long.

One of the most controversial things I've ever published, based on the sheer volume and intensity of the mail sent to me afterwards, was my statement of belief that Eddie Murphy is, in fact, done. I am happy to say that Eddie proved me wrong this weekend, if only for a single moment. If that happened, then anything could happen. That's good to know. I still don't believe he's ever going to get back out there in a major way. The occasion was Murphy's acceptance of the Mark Twain Prize For American Humor from the Kennedy Center, a major award at this point considering it's only been around for 18 years. That means that Eddie's been retired from comedy a full decade longer than they've been giving out this award. And to be fair, Eddie really only has two comedy albums to his name. One had a TV special that accompanied it,...

Eddie Murphy may have refused to imitate Bill Cosby during the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary episode, but the Murphy evidently had a change of heart on Sunday night. While accepting the Mark Twain Prize for humor, Murphy took a few shots at Cosby, who won the award in 2009. Murphy did an impression of the embattled comedian that he first made famous in his 1987 stand up special “Eddie Murphy Raw.” “Bill has one of these. Did y’all make Bill give his back?” Murpy said of his award statuette, according to Mashable. “No, because I know there was a big outcry from.

John Cena leaving WWE is on the face of it a very bad thing. He’s scheduled to take off after Hell In A Cell, and won’t be back until after Christmas.
Already stagnant Raw ratings are going to be hurt, plus there’s two Network specials that he will be missing. Both Survivor Series and TLC would have been stronger with WWE’s franchise star.
However, there are some unforeseen benefits in John Cena leaving WWE. A range of opportunities are about to open up, there’s a vacuum that needs to be filled. In his absence, there could be some real progressive action in WWE.

Cena’s exit should mean a new Us Champion. Surely there is no way he’ll be holding on to the belt for two whole months, without ever appearing once.

In an interview with Bloomberg Wednesday, Brian Grazer announced he's developing a Neflix film for Eddie Murphy. Grazer described the film as if he were speaking to Cahiers du Cinéma, calling it "a tour de force movie that’s cinéma vérité with Eddie Murphy being as raw as he can be." As cinéma vérité is a style of documentary filmmaking that relies heavily on improvisation to highlight its subjects, we can probably expect a return to Murphy's '80s comedy roots — as seen in his 1987 stand-up film Raw — and less of the stark Method acting of The Adventures of Pluto Nash.

When you think of Stone Cold Steve Austin, what comes to mind first? The signature sound of breaking glass as he’d march down the entrance ramp? The time he doused Shane and Vince McMahon with a beer truck? His record as a six-time WWF Champion? “What?”
There’s a lot of reasons why many people still consider the toughest S.O.B. to be the greatest wrestling talent of all time. Austin himself will be the first to admit that he wasn’t the world’s best wrestler, but his endless charisma and strong character made him utterly compelling. He very well could have just been another pre-Attitude Era wrestler long since forgotten, but once he uttered the famous “Austin 3:16” speech, he appealed to charged-up young men the world over who also wanted to drink beer and slap their boss around.

"Trainwreck" director Judd Apatow has been a relentless critic of Bill Cosby's since the rape allegations resurfaced in the media. During a promotional appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," Apatow got to simultaneously return to his stand-up comedy roots while skewering The Cos with a cruel and reasonably accurate impression (and one that also calls back to the punchline from Eddie Murphy's Cosby routine from "Eddie Murphy Raw"). The new comedy "Get Hard" stars Kevin Hart as an unlikely coach who trains Will Ferrell for a stint in prison. In one scene, Hart insists that Ferrell go to a top La brunch spot and give oral sex to a random patron in the bathroom to learn -- I guess? -- the mechanics of prison rape. Yes, this movie equates consensual gay sexual activity with actual rape. Cut to Will Ferrell in a restaurant bathroom gagging at the sight of a penis for the amusement of a multiplex audience. Could it be the most homophobic scene in a comedy of the past ten years? It's certainly a candidate. To commemorate this weirdly ignorant movie, we've compiled a list: movies with homophobic scenes so blatant, they made us shudder. In Eddie Murphy's stand-up classic Raw, the comedian reveals, "Richard [Pryor] is the one who made me want to do comedy. Hard to believe it, but Eddie Murphy was once one of the biggest stars and box office draws in the world. Since the heady days of his Raw and Delirious stand up shows and the runaway success that the Beverly Hills Cop franchise brought him, it's fair to say that his career has been in steady decline. With a string of poor career choices and forgettable roles, Murphy needs a hit, and Lee Daniels might be the man to give him a role worth remembering. Murphy has joined the cast of Daniel's Richard Pryor biopic, and the smart money says he will play Pryor's father in the movie. Pryor had a turbulent lifestyle and drowned out the problems in his life with cocktails of drugs and booze, in between playing to sell out shows all over America. Widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians of all time, there's plenty...

In a bizarre Twitter rant yesterday, Norm Macdonald divulged 100 tweets worth of behind-the-scenes details from the making of SNL 40. His most revealing tweets, however, related to Eddie Murphy.
According to Macdonald, Murphy, who hadn’t been back to Studio 8H since leaving the show in 1985, refused to impersonate Bill Cosby, who’s been facing allegations of sexually assaulting multiple women, in a sketch. Instead, the veteran comedian opted to reminisce, however briefly, on his time on the show.

Thirty years ago today, Beverly Hills Cop hit theatres, introducing the world to Axel Foley and cementing its star,Eddie Murphy, as the king of 1980s comedy.
With his recurring appearances both as a cast member and host on “Saturday Night Live,” Murphy brought to life some of the show’s most recognizable sketch characters, including Mr. Robinson, Buckwheat, and “Stevie Wonder.” His stand-up gigs in the 1980s are also legendary, and the filmed versions of Raw and Delirious are oft quoted and considered the height of stand-up.
For those not familiar with Delirious, it may come as a surprise that the voice of the beloved, scene-stealing Donkey from Shrek also made the most vulgar stand-up special in existence. Murphy’s 1983 special featured 230 instances of the f-word, and it’s only sixty-nine minutes.
Let’s put aside his work on “Saturday Night Live” and stand-up, and look at Murphy’s contribution to film.

Chicago – One the hottest, most creative and “fluffiest” stand-up comics working today is Gabriel Iglesias. The comedian riffs on the circumstances of his own life, as he deals with his adventures in the comedy world. He has put that all together in a new stand-up concert film, appropriately entitled “The Fluffy Movie.”
Iglesias was born in San Diego, but grew up in Long Beach, California. After high school, he worked for a mobile phone company while doing stand-up comedy on the side. When he was 21 years old, he turned to stand-up full time. He worked his way up and gained cult-like popularity with routines that include his amazing ability to mimic voices and sound effects. He gained the nickname “Fluffy” from his act, in which he described the levels of “fatness” (Fluffy was right before, “daaaaamn” and “hell, no”). The comic has recently dropped 100 pounds, and is primed to hit the big screen.

Alexander Rusev, the Bulgarian Brute. WWE’s latest Nxt call-up made a big impression at the Royal Rumble, and since then he has been biding his time, appearing in vignettes on Raw and Smackdown before he makes his television debut. The time for plotting is now for the creative department, as they have basically a blank slate heel to build in this new year. And I am so excited for this!!
In 2014, the WWE is somewhat lacking in sizable, fearsome monsters. The likes of Kane and Brock Lesnar have had their time in the past and are fully established as such, so there’s no point in placing them in midcard feuds. Batista is ridiculously out of shape, Roman Reigns seems destined for a face turn, so there is a niche that needs to be filled, which Alexander Rusev can easily do.

The time has come folks. The WWE has finally launched the WWE Network in the United States (the rest of the World to follow eventually) and I had a chance to spend the last couple of days delving into the service.
I’ll begin by saying that my review and look at the service is based on my use of it on PS3 and Laptop Computer. The launch, if you are one who follows the news on these matters, was a small disaster, with many people being unable to access the correct pages in order to sign up, and this issue went on for the first day of the launch. Since then, due to the slowing down of traffic attempting to sign up, this issue has cleared up, but that doesn’t mean that the WWE Network has been all smooth sailing.
Currently we are three days into the service...

The time has finally arrived. Tonight on Raw ‘The Animal’ is unleashed.
Dave Batista’s return to a WWE ring is one loaded with potential. In an era bereft of legitimate main event draws, Batista is a significant boost to the company. He was the hottest star in the whole WWE during his 2005 main event run, continuing to be a franchise player for the years afterward. When it comes to spiking ratings, selling PPVs, drawing crowds and retailing merchandise he is a considerable asset – and that money he brings in is ultimately good for everyone involved with WWE.
Batista’s return tonight on Raw will be the first time we have seen him in WWE since 2010. He is expected to be around for the next two years, possibly with some time off over the summer. The WWE have big plans for Batista in the run up to Wrestlemania 30, with some...

Bill Cosby turned 75 today, and perhaps to celebrate, he and Comedy Central have announced that the legendary comedian, actor and author will starring in his first television concert special in 30 years, "Far From Finished." The show, which will be compiled from material that Cosby performed at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center earlier this summer, is being directed by Robert Townsend, who has under his belt the famous concert film "Eddie Murphy Raw."Darryl M. Bell, Judi Marmel, Robert Hartmann and Stu Schreiberg are executive producing the concert event, which comes from Levity Productions. Cosby's last stand-up special was the landmark 1983 "Bill Cosby: Himself," which Cosby directed and which featured a lot of material that would lead to "The Cosby Show." Commenting on why he returned to the form, Cosby said, "Because... funny is funny." "Far From Finished" will air on Comedy Central on November 24, 2013. Take a look at a clip.

"Despicable Me 2" and "The Lone Ranger" have received the lion's share of press over the last week, but it's "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" that has become a surprise box office hit. According to numbers released by Deadline.com, Hart's stand-up comedy film has already earned $7.4 million in ticket sales during its first two days of release. Per Variety, "Let Me Explain" could have $29 million in its coffers by Sunday night.
Should Hart's film -- which was filmed at a sold-out Madison Square Garden appearance last year -- reach that lofty tally during opening weekend, it would already become the fourth highest stand-up comedy film of all time, behind only "Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip" ($36 million), "The Original Kings of Comedy" ($38 million) and "Eddie Murphy Raw" ($50 million).
That "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" is a big success shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Hart's last stand-up comedy film,...

Kevin Hart may be one of the most popular Black stand-up comedians today but, at one time, a young, leather jumpsuit-clad Eddie Murphy dominated the stand-up scene. His acclaimed "Eddie Murphy Raw" (1987) captured the attention and laughter of critics and audiences alike, with Murphy drawing comparisons to a young Richard Pryor. Filmed live in New York City, the film finds Murphy instigating everything from the "innate" unfaithfulness in men to the pseudo bravado of Italian-Americans after watching the "Rocky" film series. "All right Rocky! All right Sly," he screams in a thick Italian accent, before performing a scene where two characters engage in a culture clash, dispelling all...

So many Goonie-Goo-Goos, so little time.
Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler, and Russell Brand were among the throng of comedy nerds turned superstars who came out Saturday night to pay homage the man who gave the world Axel Foley, Gumby Dammit!, the Klumps, Jimmy “Thunder” Early, and on and on. Spike TV’s two-hour Eddie Murphy: One Night Only taped Saturday in Beverly Hills (it airs Nov. 14 at 10 p.m. on Spike), and if the carpet-length display of Murphy’s moniker in gold letters wasn’t enough to honor the man, the accolades inside certainly were.
Besides Sandler, Rock,...
