While on holiday last week I re-read the toast of the Signifying Monkey (here), an African-American reworking of African mythology depicting the survival strategies of the trickster (the titular monkey) attempting, in the face of oppression and discrimination to defuse the powers of exploitation and undermine (racial) misrepresentation. He does so not through violence or aggression but cunning and wit. It is a powerful poem with a strong resonance in the African-American political struggle. Signifying, in the non-folkloric sense, is the creation of new “language”, a “way of saying one thing but meaning another”, and is a trope that can be found in music, particularly in blues and jazz, in the improvisations of Coltrane, Monk and others, and in soul music, in testifying and calling out (see the music of James Brown especially.) Here, though, it reminded me of Muhammad Ali. Ali was the great urban trickster of sixties and seventies America and,...

Night At The Museum:Battle Of The Smithsonian (Blu-Ray)20th Century Fox Home Entertainment2009/PG/105 minsNow Available – List Price $39.98Hollywood sometimes doesn't get that just because a film made a ton of money it doesn't mean everyone thought it was good. Nor does it mean they should make a sequel, but that's just what we're getting with 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian'. If your kid nags you to see this, don't get upset. I didn't care for the first film and though calling this follow-up and improvement isn't saying much, it's not the worst time you can spend at the movies. I miss the days when Ben Stiller took chances and put himself out on a limb with unconventional material. He seems to be going through the motions now and though 'Tropic Thunder' was a big hit and had some enjoyable aspects, it felt very commercial to me.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.

First, let's set the record straight on all the Georges.
It's a helpful exercise in case you plan on sampling tonight's premiere of George Foreman's new reality show on TV Land, "Family Foreman."
As many people know, the former heavyweight boxing champion and famed appliance "grillionaire" (TV Land's word, not mine) named six of his 10 children after himself - five boys named George (Jr., III, IV, V and VI) plus one daughter named Georgette (she would have been George II if she had been male).
