A representative for Weiss’ record label, Norton Records, confirmed the news of her death to The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death has been revealed at this time.
“Mary was an icon, a hero, a heroine, to both young men and women of my generation and of all generations,” Miriam Linna, of Norton Records, said in a statement, obtained by the BBC.
Weiss rose to fame as a teenager with the girl group, which was formed in the Queens borough of New York City. The band consisted of Mary, her older sister Betty Weiss, and twins Marge and Mary Ann Ganser.

Mary Weiss, the former lead singer of the 1960s pop girl group The Shangri-Las, died Friday at 75 years old. Her death was confirmed by her husband, who offered no details.
The group was made up of two sets of sisters, Mary and Betty Weiss, and twins Marge and Mary Ann Ganser, who formed in the Queens borough of New York City.
Mary Weiss was the lead singer, singing about teenage love and tragedy on such hits as “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and “Leader of the Pack.” The latter was written by George “Shadow” Morton, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, and became a No. 1 pop hit in 1964.
“Remembering Mary Weiss with much love and affection. Mary was the ultimate,” Miriam Linna, who runs Norton Records, Weiss’ record label, said in a post on Facebook.
By 1968, the Shangri-Las disbanded because of litigation, a subject that Weiss said she was prevented from discussing even decades later.

Mary Weiss, who fronted the influential 1960s-era girl group The Shangri-Las, has died at the age of 75.
Hailing from Queens, New York, The Shangri-Las was composed of two pairs of sisters: Mary and Betty Weiss and Marge and Mary Ann Ganser. As teenagers (Mary was just 15 years old), the quartet signed a record deal Red Bird Records and were teamed with producer George “Shadow” Morton. They experienced almost immediate success, achieving a pair of hit singles in quick succession. Released in August 1964, “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” hit No. 5 in the US and No. 14 in the UK. The following month saw The Shangri-Las climb all the way to No. 1 with “Leader of the Pack.”
By the end of 1964, The Shangri-Las’ popularity had skyrocketed and the group found themselves sharing concert bills with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and James Brown.

Ken Kelsch, the hard-charging cinematographer and Vietnam War veteran who shot the down-and-dirty classic Bad Lieutenant and 11 other features for iconoclastic director Abel Ferrara, has died. He was 76.
Kelsch died Monday at Hackettstown Medical Center in New Jersey after a battle with Covid and pneumonia, his son, Chris Kelsch, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If you knew him, you probably have a story about him,” Chris wrote on Facebook. “He really was a great man, loved by many. A war hero who filled every room with his presence. An artist who never stopped being himself. A caring father who would do anything for his kids and grandkids. Shared his experience, wisdom and love with all. Our family will deeply miss him and always love him, as I’m sure many of you will as well.”

We’ve seen multiple streaming companies remove titles from their service over the last year in a bid to save money, and Deadline has reported that Roku has joined them. The outlet reports that Roku has begun removing a handful of titles from their service, including Most Dangerous Game starring Christoph Waltz.
Most Dangerous Game began life as a Quibi Original (remember that mess?) before it was salvaged by Roku, who renewed the series for a second season. After learning that he will soon die from a terminal illness and desperate to provide for his pregnant wife, Dodge Maynard (Liam Hemsworth) accepts an invitation from a mysterious man (Christoph Waltz) to participate in a deadly game of survival. Each hour Dodge survives will earn him more money, for a total of $24.5 million if he survives the full 24 hours.

I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

In 1939, Sadaho Maeda was born in Fukuoka, the third of five children to an Imperial Army pilot and a retired track-and field runner. While still a toddler, the family moved to Chiba Prefecture where Sadaho grew up. Perhaps that location was the inspiration of the publicity people at Toei in 1960 to rename this “new face” – Shin'ichi Chiba. He became a teen favorite as a “funky hat” detective in a series directed by Kinji Fukasaku, and then gained another fan base with his pursuit of serious martial arts training. Chiba was already a powerhouse by the time the three “Street Fighter” films in 1974 introduced him to the world as Sonny Chiba.
If the world had granted him more time, Toru Murakawa's “Game Trilogy” in 1978-1979, might have done the same for Yusaku Matsuda. Although it was always already too late for Matsuda, we now have time to...

Of the many questions one might ask when watching Abel Ferrara’s clunky portrayal of the legendary and controversial early 20th-century Italian friar, Padre Pio, the main one has to be: Why, oh why Abel, did you decide to make the movie in English?
Granted, Ferrara probably felt more comfortable working in his native tongue — as likely did Shia Labeouf, who seems fully committed to his pious role, sporting a beard that’s bigger than the Book of Psalms itself. But the Bronx-born director has been living in Rome for a while now, and had he chosen Italian for this story of a priest caught between his alleged healing powers and his visions of Lucifer, between the rise of fascism and a growing communist revolt in a small village, this bungled drama may have seemed a little more credible.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes, we get to talk to movie stars about some of their own B-Sides!
Conor and I were honored to speak with screen legend Harvey Keitel, star of Lansky, written and directed by Eytan Rockaway. In the crime drama, which is now available digitally, Keitel plays the real-life gangster Meyer Lansky, recounting his complicated life to a down-on-his-luck writer (Sam Worthington).
We chat with Keitel about some B-Sides from the early ‘90s: The Two Jakes, Point of No Return, and Dangerous Game. There’s also a bit about The Border from 1982, a Tony Richardson crime thriller well worth your time.

The future is here and it’s out of control in the dazzling sci-fi thriller Override starring Luke Goss – released 6th September on DVD and Digital. To celebrate the new release, we are giving away three DVDs!
The legendary Luke Goss (Hellboy 2) stars alongside Superman himself Dean Cain, and Jess Impiazzi in Override, a terrifically entertaining, smartly plotted mix of Ex Machina and I, Robot, about a futuristic reality show using an alluring female android that goes badly wrong.
Stylishly filmed, with sleek effects and a pulsing soundtrack, and a terrific performance from Impiazzi as a seriously sultry ‘perfect wife’ – the ‘Reality Interface Android’ (R.I.A) who goes off the rails, the film wouldn’t look out of place as a slick and sexy feature-length Black Mirror episode.
As well as pop-idol-turned-prolific-action-star Goss, the film also features much-loved 80s pop star Sinitta and Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt; as well Charlie Clapham,...

It’s official: Quibi’s pricey programming slate will live on at Roku.
As previously reported, Roku has acquired exclusive global rights to 75 of the now-defunct streaming service’s shows in a deal that The Wall Street Journal says was priced at "significantly less" than $100 million. The content will arrive on Roku's in-house Roku Channel later this year.
Deadline notes that the acquisition marks Roku’s biggest move yet into original programming, and comprises most of Quibi’s library -- including the Liam Hemsworth-starring Most Dangerous Game and horror home improvement series Murder House Flip -- aside from select daily news shows. As negotiated by Quibi, rights for the shows will revert back to producers after seven years even after they transition to Roku. Quibi’s infrastructure and technology are not a part of the deal.

For the first three decades of his career, Abel Ferrara was a seminal New York filmmaker whose gritty tales of furious pariahs, addicts, and rebels made Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets” look like “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.” But Ferrara fled New York after 9/11 and found a new life abroad. On a recent evening in Rome, he stood on the porch of his home, thousands of miles from the city that put him on the map, and contemplated his history of battling for final cut.
“You can’t paint a mustache on a Mona Lisa just because you fucking buy it,” he said, wearing a pair of scruffy headphones as he stared into a Skype session on his laptop. His leathery features and wisps of long white hair gleamed against a shadowy backdrop. “You dig what I mean? I’m working in my own language.”
With Ferrara, meaning can be an elusive thing.

One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Abel Ferrara's King of New York (1990) is playing June 16 - July 16, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom.“In striving to sin, to blaspheme, Ferrara’s heroes assert with Lucifer their moral autonomy, their sovereignty, their heroic identity, their glory, pitifully”—Tag Gallagher We’re introduced to Frank White (Christopher Walken) with one of director Abel Ferrara’s iconic roving pans, creeping left–right from the darkness of the prison wall to the harsh white of Frank’s cell. Frank is placed small in the frame, positioned slightly off-centre towards the bottom corner, his back to the camera as he prays silently. The prison bars dominate the composition, abstracted into silhouettes by Ferrara’s chiaroscuro lighting. A police baton enters the frame and knocks twice on the cell door, jarring Frank out of his concentration. The door is then...

In The Overlook, A.V. Club film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky examines the misfits, underappreciated gems, and underseen classics of film history.
“The information highway is leading straight to hell…”
—Abel Ferrara
The films of Abel Ferrara are probably too anguished and tragic to be called hangout movies. To an extent, they wallow in states of sin, doom, and moral disrepair: a personal hell in Bad Lieutenant, the Lower East Side as it faces the end of time in 4:44 Last Day On Earth, a grueling film shoot in Dangerous Game. To the circles of Ferrara’s inferno, one can also add the indistinct cyberpunk future of his 1998 William Gibson adaption, New Rose Hotel. It’s a shame that Ferrara’s forays into the fantastic—such as Body Snatchers and the vampire film The Addiction—are more obscure than his crime films and psychodramas, as they interpret well-worn sci-fi ...

Warren is an alcoholic, degenerate, drifter. On his way down to Mexico he finds himself stranded in Bedford Flats a one-horse town deep in the American desert. Unfortunately for him the town’s pastime is rounding up drifters and hunting them as part of an elaborate sporting event. This most dangerous and deadly game and bloody fight for survival that builds to a violent, vile, live-or-die showdown in the desert.
Once again the classic “Most Dangerous Game” story is mined for another take on the hunting humans theme… This time round filmmakers Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson lace their particular tale with an incredible streak of black humour that provides a distraction from the all-too familiar tale. In his elephantine sixth edition of The New Biographical Dictionary of Film (2014), critic David Thomson reserves his most scathing, uncharitable critique for Madonna. To him, her mere existence on film is an affront to the medium itself. He finds that she is incapable of understanding the art of acting, and spends the space of nine paragraphs belaboring the point. “There is nothing in Madonna to be advertised,”he writes, “except for her ironic, deflecting contempt. She is an ad for advertising.”It is a curiously mean-spirited entry in a book filled with thoughtful, sympathetic reconsiderations of women whom critics wrote off in their time. Thomson’s entries on Tippi Hedren and Kim Novak are among his most articulate and impassioned. Yet Thomson is utterly heartless when it comes to Madonna, suspecting that “[s]he is disappointed about something, and hugely driven by resentment.” Thomson wasn’t exactly staking out a contrarian position.

Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost are having a good week. The “Nerve” directors opened their latest film on Tuesday evening to a stellar $1.1 million, and by the time they sat down with IndieWire on Wednesday afternoon, it was trucking its way to an estimated first-day take of $3.8 million. Not too bad for a mid-week, mid-summer release about an online game gone bad.
And that’s not the only thing the duo have on their plate right now: The long-time filmmaking pair are opening another film this week, the horror feature “Viral,” which will hit limited release and VOD on Friday. It’s clear, however, that “Nerve” is their primary concern and one they’re very pleased to see hitting the zeitgeist so perfectly.

Beneath the neon haze of its teenage fantasia and the throbbing obviousness of its platitudes about the perils of social media, “Nerve” highlights some ugly truths about the economy of anonymous spectacle. This is a film that knows what people really want to see when they think that nobody is watching them. Blisteringly cool one moment and ridiculously silly the next (much like its high school heroine), this punchy and propulsive late summer surprise is able to capture the way we live now because it displays such a vivid understanding of the reasons why we live that way.
Based on Jeanne Ryan’s 2012 novel of the same name and helmed by “Catfish” directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, “Nerve” will have a shelf-life of approximately 12 minutes (the technology it depicts has been revolutionized at least once since the movie wrapped production), but it sure is fun while it lasts.

But when the virus enters their home, the sisters must choose between protecting each other or surviving the virus. Watch the film’s trailer below.

“Viral” is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The duo previously directed the acclaimed 2010 documentary “Catfish,” about a young man who builds a romantic relationship with a young woman online only to discover the numerous lies therein; it led to a MTV reality TV show of the same name that’s executive produced by Joost and Schulman. The two also directed “Paranormal Activity 3” and “Paranormal Activity 4.

Like The Marine franchise, which featured a new WWE superstar in the lead role in each consecutive film, The Condemned 2 sees Randy Orton (who also took over the lead from John Cena for 12 Rounds 2) stars as bounty hunter turned hunted man, Will Tanner; and – like Orton’s 12 Rounds 2 – this film pales in comparison to the original, abandoning everything that made that Running Man-esque action film so much fun.
The Condemned was one of WWE Studios earliest – and best received – movies, alongside The Marine and See No Evil. And whilst those two films have already had sequels, it’s taken almost ten years for someone to put together a sequel to the Stone Cold Steve Austin starring original.

"She's a camp event and a celebrity and that's all and the last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could see coming." —Scott Rudin, lover of many women. Akhmatova has a great poem, one of her Northern Elegies, which starts like this: I, like a river,Have been turned aside by this harsh age.I am a substitute. My life has flowedInto another channelAnd I do not recognize my shores. The poet uses the power of imagination to do a mild perversion of Proust’s Madeleine. Or not Proust, a realization of Heisenberg. To conjure an entire dead-cat life, another conditional mood persona, the ahistoric Akhmatova, who would have been. If this By the Sea, with all its creaky dollhouse dust, had been made by Rainer Werner Fassbinder or by Todd Haynes I bet you all $10 everybody (and Scott Rudin in particular) would be creaming their jeans.

The Apu Trilogy (Satyajit Ray)
Although it premiered 60 years ago this week at the Museum of Modern Art, Satyajit Ray‘s Pather Panchali remains among both the most accomplished of debuts and cinema’s most universally relatable experiences. Accentuating the basics of human emotions to result in the most complex of reactions, Ray’s subsequent trilogy of films follows the hardships of a Bengali boy as he passes into adulthood, a delicately powerful tale of transition that’s now been gloriously restored.

Special Mention: The Most Dangerous Game
Directed by Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack
Written by James Creelman
USA, 1932
Genre: Survival Horror
The first of many official and unofficial screen versions of Richard Connell’s short story of the same name, The Most Dangerous Game was made in 1932, in the era known as “Pre-Code Hollywood,” a time when filmmakers were able to get away with sexual innuendo, illegal drug use, adultery, abortion, intense violence, homosexuality, and much more. It was during this time that a film like The Most Dangerous Game was allowed to be made and shown to the general public without fear of censorship. The film was put together by producer Willis O’Brien while in pre-production on King Kong, and features several of the same cast and crew members, as well as props and sets from Kong. Despite these obvious cost-cutting measures, Dangerous Game never feels like a second-rate production,...

As far as cinematic careers go, director Anthony Baxter has certainly carved out a curious niche. His debut documentary, "You've Been Trumped," chronicled the promises made and rules broken as Donald Trump endeavored to build a world-class golf course on a pristine and environmentally diverse piece of Scotland shoreline. Now, a few years on from that film, Baster returns with Trump in his sights again for "A Dangerous Game." Baxter is clearly angry about the real estate tycoon's arrogance and the politicians in Scotland's parliament who cater to his whims. However, the filmmaker's fury is often unfocused and the documentary swings wildly in a bunch of directions but rarely lands any crucial punches. You won't need to have seen 'Trumped' (I haven't) to dive into "A Dangerous Game," as you're given the basics of what you need to know, with the scope of 'Dangerous Game' expanding to allow...
