And the number one reason Why David Letterman Didn’t Get Cast in Airplane!: he was awful! The titan of late night, top ten lists and “retirement” beards, Letterman once unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Ted Striker, which would go to Robert Hays instead.
In an upcoming oral history book titled “Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The True History of Airplane!” – due out on October 3rd – Letterman recalled, “I get out there, and they had set up a cockpit for the aircraft with chairs. I had a chair, and there was another chair where the copilot would be. We did the scene once, and then they came in and gave me some notes, and then we did it maybe two more times. And I kept saying all along, ‘I can’t act, I can’t act, I can’t act,’ and then one of them came to...

There’s so much new TV this week that we barely have time to write this intro. From the return of “Atlanta,” “Bridgerton,” “Riverdale,” and “9-1-1,” to Olivia Rodrigo concert films, mega-church documentaries and the long-awaited “Halo” adaptation, there’s simply Too Much To Watch. But hey, we know you’ll give it your best shot.

More than four years after the previous season aired, “Atlanta” is back for its hotly anticipated third season. This season once again stars Donald Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz, and was directed by Glover’s longtime creative collaborator Hiro Murai. But this season of “Atlanta” is markedly free of Atlanta, as the new season follows Paper Boi (Henry) as he goes on his first international tour, with stops in London, Paris and Amsterdam. If you expect a movie starring the Elliott family and directed by Bridey Elliott to be a wacky laugh riot, then you really aren’t familiar with the truly weird Elliott creations. Sure, they’ve been on SNL and Silicon Valley, but the ones Chris Elliott wrote and created were Get a Life and Cabin Boy. His daughter took a moder nwoman’s extrapolation of that kind of weird comedy. The Reynolds family gather in a remote home months away from one of their daughter’s wedding. All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

It gave us Louis Walsh tooting on a trumpet, Rough Copy swinging their canes and Sam Callahan murdering Dean Martin. Big Band Week was everything we wished for and more last night.
But who will be getting the boot out of the competition this evening? Only seven acts can go through and for someone, this evening's sing-off will be the end of the road.
Join us from 8pm when we'll have a running commentary on all the action, including the special guest appearances from Robbie Williams and Celine Dion.
20:59Have a good evening guys and girls. We're off to watch Downton Abbey's finale. Have a good night!
20:58That's a wrap. Next week's theme? A rather bland Great British Songbook. We've also got a live performance from Gary Barlow to look forward to. Hmm. Oh, and did someone say Miley Cyrus? Bring your foam fingers along next Sunday.

Exclusive: Add David Letterman to the outcry over today’s exclusion of Zero Dark Thirty‘s Kathryn Bigelow from the Best Director Oscar nomination roster. While the film is up for Best Picture and four other major awards, I’m told that on tonight’s Late Show With David Letterman, Dave calls Bigelow’s exclusion “a travesty.” That’s tame compared to some of the reactions around town. Son of Rogue's Gallery, a compilation of songs from the seafaring tradition, will feature a grizzled crew including Keith Richards, Michael Stipe, Nick Cave and Shane MacGowan
Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and the Pogues' Shane MacGowan are among the contributors to a new compilation of pirate ballads. The grizzled, A-list crew was assembled by Johnny Depp, who performs on the album, and the people behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
First, some more names. Among the hearties who are shivering timbers on Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys: Tom Waits with Keith Richards, Michael Stipe with Courtney Love, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Marianne Faithful with the McGarrigle sisters, Sissy Bounce with Akron/Family, Beth Orton, Macy Gray and Sean Lennon.
The two-disc set, due next year, is the sequel to a compilation from 2006. There too, Pirates producer Hal Willner manned the tiller.

On a recent summer afternoon, Johnny Depp walks into a luxury suite at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Oddly, he is dressed like a pirate. A faded paisley do-rag is tied around his head. Smaller strips of cloth are braided into his hair, and he has gold caps on several teeth. His loose white T-shirt, with its blue horizontal stripes, maybe more sailor than pirate, but it's definitely in the nautical family.
We should note that Depp has not come directly from the set of his latest film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest...

"Matrix" directors Lana and Andy Wachowski, along with "Run Lola Run" filmmaker Tom Tykwer, have crafted a big, tasty slice of Wtf pie in the form of their new movie epic "Cloud Atlas." The film breaks boundaries both in its narrative (interweaving six separate stories of different genres) and through its performers (the actors play multiple roles of different age, race and gender), all the while somehow remaining not just coherent but wildly entertaining. Who'd a thunk it?
While the end credits reveal who played which characters — leading to some audible gasps from the audience — we thought we'd fill you in on just who each of these actors appear as and how much Silly Putty was applied to achieve this.

Cashiers du Cinemart, the legendary cult movie zine that puts all other movie zines to shame, has returned with a brand new print edition that is available in a variety of formats, from an old school photocopied version to a glossy high-end print-on-demand version to an electronic Kindle edition and more.

In typical fashion of it’s earlier print editions, Cashiers du Cinemart #16 is a massive 100-plus page endeavor with contributions from numerous writers, including White himself, riffing on classic cult movies, taking apart mainstream films, analyzing obscure genres, interviewing filmmakers a ton more fun stuff.

Happy Midweek, Readers!Last weekend I took a sojourn to Los Angeles to cover an upcoming drama for the site. My coverage will be swinging around as this movie comes close to release, but for those of us in the covering-flicks-biz: summer is closing off fast.Sure, the first thing I'm going to reccommend this week is over 100 issues of a comic book, and that might give you the idea that you have some idle time before the autumn entertainment season, and maybe you do.Don't get too comfortable, though. I suggest you let your mind rot for about one or two more weeks (Labor Day weekend is traditionally a "stop wearing white," "stop being your stupid summer self" weekend anyway), then we get to jump into new seasons of good TV shows and smaller films that can afford to put a character front-and-center for two hours. It's not that...

Johnny Depp was the biggest star at Saturday's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" premiere, but he hardly walked the carpet alone: In addition to his cast mates, there were some serious Depp lookalikes among the array of pirate jugglers on stilts roaming the event.
At least three of the Depp-a-likes were so spot on that thousands of fans -- and at one point, even the dubious press -- went nuts screaming "Johnny, Johnny! Johnny!"
One early Johnny-wannabe was actually the stand in for Capt. Jack Sparrow in the third "Pirates."
"They brought me back for #4, so that's pretty cool," admitted Robbie Rodriquez, clad in full Sparrow regalia. He told us that he's been looking like Johnny Depp since "21 Jump Street." And now he gets paid to look like him. Score.
Another Faux Johnny had totally perfected the voice, mannerisms and the sauced swagger. Still another was convincing because...

Norm MacDonald has never appeared particularly interested in Adam Sandler-style superstardom. Especially after the movies didn’t work out — he starred in Dirty Work, an overlooked gem, and Screwed, an overlooked travesty — he’s been pretty comfortable on the fringes of Hollywood. Heck, his greatest role in the last decade has arguably been as Conan O’Brien’s favorite talk-show guest (including a brilliant appearance during last year’s Late Night war.) But there’s reason to hope that a full-on MacDonald comeback is coming: According to the Associate Press, the comedian will star in Sports Show with Norm MacDonald on Comedy Central,...

HollywoodNews.com: The Super Bowl weekend is not what anyone would consider prime movie-going real-estate, so it stands to reason that there wouldn’t be much on the wide-release circuit this weekend. Screen Gems scored their biggest opening weekend ever last Super Bowl Sunday with the romantic drama Dear John, which opened to $30 million and knocked Avatar off the top spot. But generally speaking, Screen Gems’s has had pretty decent success opening teen girl-friendly PG-13 horror pictures, often remakes of R-rated 70s and 80s slasher pics, over the last several years, so they went that route again this year. This year’s entry, The Roommate, a film so obviously copied from Single White Female that complaints/summons are probably being drafted as we speak.

Roger Guenveur Smith‘s turn in live Action comedy television series Eagleheart, to air February 3, 2011 on Adult Swim.
Smith will star opposite Chris Elliott (Cabin Boy) in what looks to be a spoof of Walk Texas Ranger. Smith hasn’t performed in many comedies, so upon flipping through channels and stumbling on Family Guy/American Dad reruns, I was thrown when I saw the clip and Smith’s visage on the Cartoon Network’s late night adult themed program.
The series is being produced by Conaco which is the production company of Conan O’Brien.

The Action Pack presents a special Shark Week screening of the
Cabin Boy Quote-along
Thurs, Aug 5 at the Alamo Ritz; advance tickets available right here
“These pipes… are Clean!!!”
Oh man, I love the Alamo’s shark week. There’s no way I would have been able to pass a Cabin Boy Quote-Along through the programming staff if we hadn’t specifically been looking for a movie with some shark action and more quotable lines than one guy just whining about not having a big enough boat. Fortunately for the good of the universe, Cabin Boy features Chocki the man-shark, and so the greatest Quote-Along of all time was willed into existence and I could not possibly be more excited.
I saw this gem for the first time in high school on its opening weekend, and it’s the only time I’ve seen 20% of a crowd get up and leave during a film.

August 1-8, the Alamo is presenting a series of shark-related films that will get you out of the water and into a movie.
Every year, a certain nerdy TV channel stops airing clips of lions making love and boosts its ratings by devoting every moment of seven glorious days to nature’s rudest fish. The shark is like the Superfly of the sea, and the species’ amazing feats are as hypnotizing as they are horrifying. A couple of months ago we were talking about the sharkiest movies ever and we decided we should have our own Shark Week and to hell with everybody else.
On their Shark Week no one leaves the house. Everyone is glued to their sets, watching those damn teeth regenerate and those fins squirm. Well, not ours! We’re going to have a little fun this year, in what promises to be the first annual Shark Week at the Alamo.

Unfortunately we've lost another one of those semi-nameless yet instantly-admired character actors. You may not recognize the name James Gammon right off the bat, but rest assured that you've seen and enjoyed his work in numerous films. When I heard that the man passed away yesterday at the age of 70, I immediately thought of his gruff voice belying a strange sweetness in David Ward's Major League (he was the manager), but you guys may remember Mr. Gammon from films like Urban Cowboy, Silverado, Revenge, Silver Bullet, Cabin Boy, Wyatt Earp, Cold Mountain, Appaloosa, and some great voice work in The Iron Giant.
The actor also did quite a few westerns that were slightly before my time, in addition to lots of other television and film work. And while James Gammon will probably be best-remembered for that wonderfully distinctive voice, I think he worked so damn often because he was just a great actor.

The Saturday Night Live comedy mill has produced its share of stars. But those stars have produced a prolific stream of cinematic bile. That's not overstating matters, as will soon be clear. The sketch comedy's tendency to drive a joke into the ground doesn't bode well for the big screen. With MacGruber on the horizon, the question is whether the MacGyver spoof will be a comedy blockbuster on the level of the Austin Powers series or a ticking time bomb on par with the following.10. Cabin BoyChris Elliott was an underutilized member of SNL. So was Chris Rock, though, so that's doesn't necessarily mean anything. But would his first big release, Cabin Boy, let him break out of his shell and show how far his comedy could reach? Nope. It sank at the box office. While Elliott's tale has its flashes of surreal brilliance, by the end viewers will...

The role of Lily's father on How I Met Your Mother has been cast.
Actor/comedian Chris Elliott has landed the pivotal role, as he'll appear on the November 23 episode of the sitcom, which focuses on an awkward family reunion hosted by Lily’s grandparents.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the half hour will feature childhood flashbacks that shed light on Lily’s troubled relationship with her dad.
Elliott's face should be familiar to TV and movie fans. He's probably best known for his roles in There's Something About Mary and Cabin Boy.

Some free stuff showed up in the mail and we decided to review it. Well, in one case, we let some guy down the street review the stuff, but we still kept the stuff. - Regards, the /Film Cool Stuff Dept. [adult swim] sent me these $75 pants from their new “Finer Things” line. Wait, I’m not bragging. I’m not even sure what I’m typing because I’ve never reviewed pants. Thinking back, the closest pants-related thing I have ever reviewed (until these $75 pants) was Cabin Boy, which famously co-starred David Letterman, who owns Worldwide Pants, which is worth about 7.5-$75 million without fact-checking. Yeah, these pants, they arrived at my door, and they are navy, with bright pink, intricately stitched (by Williams Street interns?) Mooninites all over them. It's really something; almost like a low-bit invasion on cotton or a cotton-candy-colored bout of formication. Per the pants' ...

This week, the world of late night television experiences its biggest shakeup in years, as Jimmy Fallon takes the reigns of NBC's "Late Night" from Conan O'Brien, who, at the start of June, will take over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno, who moves on to start his own talk show at 10pm. With talk show hosts on our minds these days, it seemed like a good time to look back and see how they've fared on the silver screen.
Qualifications for inclusion were simple: the talk show host in question has to be best known -- and most successful -- in their show business career as a talk show host. Craig Ferguson, current host of CBS' "Late Late Show," carved out a long and successful career as an actor and director of such films as "The Big Tease" before accepting the slot after David Letterman, so he was out.

“Legend has it, a Viking ship went down in Hell’s Bucket years ago. One of the Vikings was spared a grisly death by a shark who fell in love with him. Well, you know how it goes. One thing led to another and they had one offspring. Chocky.” Oops! Wrong “Chocky.” While it’s doubtful that Steven Spielberg ever saw Cabin Boy, the director is apparently interested in bringing another Chocky to the big screen. Word is that the Tintin Man is considering making the science fiction novel “Chocky" his next directing project, which DreamWorks has extended its option for. Spielberg would presumably move on to the adaptation after his work on Tintin was completed. “Chocky” is a 1968 novel written by the late author John Wyndham, a British science fiction writer who wrote the well-known “The Day of the Triffids.” The book tells the story...

In the Terminator series an advanced computer system called Skynet makes a spontaneous leap from AI to full-fledged intelligence, which endows the network with a will and opinions of its own. This concept was considered science fiction until today, when google revealed its horrendous prejudice: If we expect google to be an ethical entity it must be held accountable for its moral shortcomings. However, google has already proven it doesn't only mean us harm. Do a google image search of "belongs in prison." The first person to appear is Chris Elliott. I thought this was a mistake--how could the man behind Cabin Boy belong in prison? So I a ...

The WB Network is getting a head start on its fall 2003 development with an early production commitment to a comedy pilot from producer Adam Sandler, writer Adam Resnick and Sony Pictures Television. The project -- sought by several networks, including ABC and Fox -- centers on a 19-year-old mayor of a small Northeastern town. Written by Resnick (Cabin Boy), the show is being produced by Sandler and Jack Giarraputo's Happy Madison Prods. and Resnick's 490 Inc. in association with SPT. Sandler, Giarraputo, Resnick and Doug Robinson, who oversees Happy Madison's TV department, are executive producing the project, which falls under Happy Madison's overall deal with SPT (HR 9/6).
