Truly Inspired
benjaminburt28 August 2017
The Tick is a little gem of the 90s, a fantastic parody of the whole super-hero genre. It's definitely a product of its time, as super-heroes today are already pretty self-aware. For its time, though, The Tick was ingenious, ahead of its time, a mockery of one of the most popular genres of the 90s. Add onto this the great wit, writing, charm, and voice acting, and you have one truly memorable show.

At the time of release of The Tick, kids also had Batman, Spider-man, X-men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk. Add onto that the comic book boom, where speculators and fans were eating up some of the worst comic book stories in the history of the industry (I'm looking at you, Clone Saga).

The Tick took everything good about the genre, made fun of it, while still staying true to it. It was exceptionally funny at times, both kid- and adult-friendly, and very self-aware. The characters, even the side characters, always got a laugh. If you like superheroes (or hate them, for that matter), I would highly recommend the Tick. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody who avoids the super-hero genre, or is tired of it, because, at the end of the day, no matter how much this show mocks super-heroes, it still plays by the rules.

The best parts about the show are definitely the writing and the delivery by the all-star voice cast, especially by the Tick himself. It is well-paced, has great action, and great jokes.

So, where does the show fall flat? Well, being a parody and a lampooning, the plot is never compelling, never emotionally gripping. It falls victim to 90s censorship, and is very tame. Also, I feel that parody can very rarely be a masterpiece, because it always relies on something better in order to get that emotional and comedic responses. I would definitely rate Batman ahead of The Tick, with X-men probably being about equal, and Spider-man being a bit below.

Despite these nitpicks, The Tick is still certainly a glorious cartoon show, and again, I would recommend it to most anyone.

Animation Classic
dave13-115 April 2012
The first season of the animation series closely follows the zany, anarchic tone of the original comic books and introduces the audience to an original superhero: nigh invulnerable (one of his favorite phrases), enthusiastically committed to smiting evil (often TOO enthusiastic), not very bright and given to spouting random good-guy clichés at odd moments. Especially funny is the coterie of lame caped hero wannabes who wander in and out of the show, such as the Tick's luckless moth-suited accountant sidekick; Der Fledermaus, a cowardly Batman-type; and American Maid, a freelance operative who dresses like a cleaning woman and fights evil by throwing a shoe at it. The animation can be at times a bit clunky looking, but the humor is clever and often biting in its zeal to send up every known superhero cliché. A particular treat is The Tick vs The Tick, adapted nearly right out of the comic book, about the Tick duking it out at a superhero themed singles bar with a wealthy Tick wannabe named Barry, while accidentally foiling the insane schemes of The Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight, all the while surrounded by caped idiots with no or dubious 'powers'. Season one: 8 out of 10.

Subsequent seasons did not quite carry the same level of zany cleverness and sometimes just recycled an earlier villain or situation. Still worth a watch, but slippage was evident. Rest of the series 7 out of 10.

This was my first introduction to the character as a kid.

When Fox Kids first aired this show back in the early 90s, it became a cult cartoon classic based on a cult comic book. It was so popular that a short lived 2001 live action series came to light on Fox, with a new Amazon Prime Video series out now as of this review. A parody of Marvel's Ant Man, The Tick is superhero satire at its best. The animation is quirky, the soundtrack amazing, and the casting very good. Little kids might not like this cartoon due to its pre tween target audience. 90s kids will love this show. Too bad it's not on amazon.

Evildoers, I say to you - Knock off all that evil! (this means you, Fox)

Ludicrous, over the top and often hilarious cartoon based on the cult comic book character created by Ben Edlund. If you've read the other reviews, you know by now that the Tick is a 7-foot tall, 400 lbs blue superhero who is in fact a spoof of other superheroes and more often than not, feels as though he were based on the Adam West interpretation of Batman (from the 1960s TV series). The Tick is ungodly strong and ungodly tough, but he's a bit too dense and cheery for his own good, so he relies on his pudgy sidekick Arthur to be the brains between the two. The City they oversee is crawling with superheroes but most of them are either incompetent or cowards or both or maybe just plain crazy (American Maid is one of the few exceptions; Sewer Urchin is a true fish out of water, as he's not very useful on land but quite a bad ass in his natural environment: the sewer), so it's usually up to Tick and Arthur to save the day.

The first season was by far the best, pitting the Tick against the Idea Men, a mad chef, a giant man-dinosaur (Dinosaur Neil), another guy who used the name Tick, a giant lava monster, a mutant killer clown, a big Jaba-the-Hutt like alien, a green clone of himself, and even Arthur's bank account among others! It's hard to believe that Townsend Coleman, who voiced the Tick, was also the voice of Michaelangelo on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (former turtles-in-arms Cam "Leonardo" Clarke and Rob "Raphael" Paulsen also worked on this show, Clarke as Die Fleadermouse and Paulsen as the 2nd voice of Arthur).

Sadly, both this show and the live action one that starred "Seinfeld" alumnus Patrick Warburton as the Tick, kept getting canceled by Fox.

A while back I picked up "The Tick: The Naked City", which was a collection of the first six Tick issues done by Ben Edlund. I can't quite place my finger on it, but there was something different about the Tick in the original comic book from his cartoon and live action incarnations. The comic book humor, while still zany, was a bit darker. Seeing as how some of the original comics and classic moments from the original comics were adapted for the cartoon (like Tick tearing up Arthur's apartment because he thinks it's a secret headquarters) makes me wish they'd have adapted the ninja story line for the show or at least featured Oedipus (a ninja babe who was kind of like a spoof of the Elektra character who appeared in the Daredevil comics) and Paul the Samurai (the man with the sword disguised as French bread) once. I still haven't read or found any of the other Tick comics so I have no idea really if the comic book Tick eventually evolved into what his cartoon counterpart is or not.

But overall, I loved this show and miss it greatly.

Let's Hang Ten For Justice!!!
KMM23 March 2002
The Tick ran on Saturday mornings for kids, but I knew of numerous adults that watched this show and loved it. The show is not for everyone, mind you. You will either understand the humor and love it, or not get it and quickly turn the channel. I was hooked on it from day one. The show had memorable characters, villains and very witty dialogue. It often left me thinking to myself that many kids were not going to get the humor because the show came off as more of a comic book satire than a kiddie show. The show did offer enough action and colorful characters to appeal to the Saturday morning crowd, though.

The writers of the show, which included Tick creator Ben Edlund, really hit a bull's-eye by creating such memorable heroes like Sewer Urchin (sounded very much like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman) and Die Fledermaus and great villains like The Terror and the unforgettable Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight. I also felt that Townsend Coleman did a wonderful job in bringing The Tick to life. He gave The Tick some real heart and soul. This show will always be one of my all-time favorites because of its satirical humor and memorable characters. I never get tired of it. I have as much fun watching The Tick now as I did when I first saw the show in the mid 1990's.

An Incredibly Well Written, Hilarious Series!
btimmfan1 November 2015
I'm 24 years old and I just recently finished watching the entire Tick Animated Series for the first time. I remember vaguely being intrigued by the Tick show when it was airing on Fox Kids (I was about 5), but for some reason my mom didn't think it was appropriate and I wasn't really allowed to watch it. That was probably for the best, because I really do think this show is wasted on children. So many of the references and jokes would go over their heads.

Anyway, about the show. It is absolutely hilarious! All 36 episodes are great, even the couple of mediocre ones still have some really funny parts that make them worth watching. If you like superheroes at all, or even if you don't, you need to check this out. This show really spoofs so many popular superheroes, as well as the whole genre in general, and it is done in a very witty and intelligent way. The episodes are really well written, with extremely creative dialogue, especially from the Tick that will have you rolling (or at least, grinning from ear to ear)!

If you didn't watch this show when it originally aired, check it out! If you did watch it when it first aired, but you were under the age of 18, check it out again! I guarantee you will find it even funnier than you remember.

Note: The show has been released on DVD, however the releases available are poor quality and are not complete with every episode. I was able to find the complete series on Blu-ray disc from eBay and the quality is fantastic!

One of the best cartoon shows to date. Very few have managed to be as good as this one.
CartoonKing226 May 2011
Yes I really mean all of that. "The Tick" has gotta be one of the greatest cartoons ever! Based on Bed Edlund's comic book series of the same name, "The Tick" follows a dumb superhero called The Tick, and his timid sidekick Arthur who protect The City from evil villains. One of these villains is named Chairface Chippendale and his face is (as his name suggests) a chair! Another is Uncle Creamy (voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait) who is an evil living ice cream cone. And there's an evil baker named The Breadmaster. Despite only having 3 seasons and 36 episodes, The Tick has gained a huge cult-following by the people who watched the series on Fox in the '90s.

This show was brilliant. Not only do we have a villain with a chair for a face, a city called "The City", but The Tick's battle-cry is "SPOON!". The writers on this show sure knew how to make one hilarious cartoon. The villains were odd, The Tick was a moron, and the stories were complete parodies of the superhero genre. Why this show was ended so soon I still don't understand. I LOVE this show, and lots of other people did (and still do) too, so why was it ended after only 3 seasons? I guess we'll never know.

"The Tick" was one of the best shows of Fox's sadly extinct Saturday morning and weekday afternoon block "Fox Kids". Truly one of the greatest cartoons ever, with hilarious characters, brilliant writing, great animation, excellent voice acting, and a really cool jazz theme song. Definitely one of the top 10 greatest cartoon shows of all time.

amazing the show was unbelievable. I never think of an episode without smirking and someone looking at me funny. I'm a big x-men fan and would actually groan if X-men replaced the the Tick on saturday mornings. Oh why is genius so missunderstood? The Midnight bomber what bombs at midnight and the sidekicks lounge are classic. I think i actually wrote the network to bring it back..oh well

It's funny, cool, with fairly decent characters too. The Tick is dumb and impulsive, but still lovable and hilarious. Plus he has his sidekick to help him save the day. It's kind of underrated in this type of cartoons, but still nothing I'd want to stick with for a long time.

This is by far the best cartoon fox ever put out. In fact The Tick is possible the very best cartoon about super heroes ever made. The cartoon makes absolutely no sense but in a good way. The characters are all funny and engaging in there own way. Be it the Tick with his always optimistic attitude, or the Sewer Urchin's Rain man speech. Even the villains got in the zany act. For instance my very favorite villain is the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight. This villain periodically talks to himself and says things that make no sense. Every episode doesn't disappoint. The first two seasons are on DVD right now. Go pick them up space ponies.

Hilarious superhero parody with great creativity put to it.
Animany948 October 2017
Imagine a world where the superheroes and supervillains take themselves all too serious compared to how silly and inept many of them actually are. Then you have The Tick Series.

The creativity, the humor, the superhero satire! It is just beyond fun! If you know the superhero stuff, you will find it even more amazing. On top of that you get a lot of really engaging voice actor who fully immerse themselves in the comedy.

I have never read the comic book this series is based on, but I can tell it is over the top hilarious and clever.

Ick! It's The Tick!
strong-122-47888512 March 2018
The dictionary defines a "tick" as being a bloodsucking parasite that transmits disease.

Now - Never once did I ever see "The Tick" suck any blood or transmit any disease - But - When it came to being a parasite - Yep - He was one of the most obnoxious, irksome, loud-mouthed, in-your-face pests (aka. parasite) ever created as an animated superhero.

And, with that in mind - I found that one of the biggest and most annoying problems with this empty-headed, ill-conceived TV series was that it gave one the clear impression that it was "cool" for "The Tick" to be this way.

Yet. The truth was - "The Tick" was downright despicable and utterly vile with his over-inflated ego, bulging muscles, and constantly flapping gums.

Yes. I do realize that this animated TV series (from 1994) was, indeed, intended to be a parody of superheroism - But, regardless of this - I found that all that it ended up doing was reducing every superhero cliche to the level of being the most hatefully sneering cynicism imaginable.

And, sure enough - After only just a short while "The Tick" (and his annoying shtick) lost its amusement-factor completely.

Poetry in motion.
usualday5 July 2004
The Tick, the cartoon adaptation of the comic book that didn't see nearly enough comic stores. From an Australian perspective, the Tick cartoon series was the first tier of the Tick empire (spanning comic books to live action TV shows) that we experienced, and I must say that the cartoon series 'made it' for me.

With the addition of animation, a comic series has a whole new layer added to it, and in the case of the Tick, the layer only improved what was a solid comic performance. The voices are perfectly cast and the animation (while repetitive or slow at times) captures the illogical (and often insane) nature of the Tick's world.

I would say (after reading the comics and seeing the live action attempts) that the cartoon series stands at the top of the heap, bringing motion of intercharacter relationships to the mix, while still remaining true to the original ideas of the author (without becoming too corny). There is nothing like hearing one of the Tick's rants going on and on and making little to no sense and just laughing it off at the end. This sort of comedy ran into trouble in the comic form, having page upon page of text without action and in the live action form by having static actors on screen who could just not sustain the melodrama needed for this kind of satire.

In all, if you want to see heroic satire through the Tick, then the cartoon is the best medium to obtain it.

laugh-a-minute
Quinoa198418 April 2009
The Tick has quickly become one of my favorite animated comedy shows. I say this in the same breath as I would say with other short-lived animated comedies that weren't always necessary "kid-friendly" like the Critic or Duckman. While The Tick aired Saturday mornings and was absolutely agreeable for kids, maybe even the actual target audience, the people who wrote the show and came up with characters like Chairface Chippendale and Dinosaur Neil and Pineapple Pokopo were aiming it on another level for older audiences or just plain-old comic book geeks. This is about as clever and awesome as they come because it can be watched at any age-range, if one is into super-heroes or the satire that can come with taking it all apart.

The world of the Tick is in good fun: the Tick himself is of good intentions but also sees himself as the be-all end-all of superheroes, who with his perplexed sidekick Arthur (he's a moth, not a bunny, by the way) they face off against some really weird and highly mockable villains like the ones mentioned above, or even the Tick's most derisive nemeses like Brainchild or the Tick... another hero named Tick, who can't not be the Tick since he has all of his clothes with his name on it! This is just outright funny and clever and witty, constantly, and it knows its audiences well. Kids love the crazy characters that come up, the randomness, even some of the lowbrow humor.

Everyone else can look to how it is actually pretty sophisticated for Saturday morning fair, as far as ridiculous parody shows go. So many lines are quotable, and so many moments seem to be funnier as an adult than as a kid. There's one episode in particular that I just watched from the first season that illustrates this: in the Tick vs the Proto Clown the Tick is sent off into a journey of self-discovery in his own mind, as a Tick with wings on its head flaps about trying to get the Tick to "get" what he's all really about in the universal sense, and while this is going on a clown who is basically the Hulk is terrorizing the city. We get this part with the clown that is conventionally funny, but the stuff with the Tick in this episode is some of the craziest television of the 90s, a hallucination that makes Homer's hot-pepper trip with Johnny Cash's coyote on the Simpsons look sane by comparison.

It's wonderful stuff, and certainly some of the best, most underrated family programming one could look for. It's outrageous, but not quite as dirty as Duckman or as obscure in references as the Critic. It skates the same lines, but it'll still keep the kiddies entertained. In that sense it's almost close to being a perfect mid-90s show that, sadly, was taken off the air a bit too soon and given a mediocre live-action treatment.

Ticking of Crime
hellraiser76 January 2021
This is another one of my favorite animated shows of all time, as well as animated shows based on a comic book series. This is truly an unusual show as it's not the kind you see every day, but that's part of why I really love animation as it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want in both visual art and storytelling without any reality restrictions. Also, the fact this is a show that's not totally for kids but actually for teens, adults or any experienced comic book fans.

The theme song is decent which isn't my favorite but an enjoyable listen as it's rather strange which some guitar beats, some singer singing jazz like tones. This fits with the show's nature as it's pretty strange. I really like the animation which is the same style as the comic book series which is cool as I wouldn't want it any other way.

The world of the Tick is cool, funny, and all kinds of weird. It's pretty much like any comic book world where it's one foot in reality but one foot away, the world is saturated with both heroes/superheroes and villains/super villains though most of them are ineffective. Everyone seems and acts normal but aren't and despite how much a person living there might want a normal life there is no chance in hell as something really crazy and major happens any minute and second.

There is the typical superhero fair of warm and bam but it's really the characters and the humor that power this show. Both the hero/superhero characters along with the villain/supervillain characters are all good in their own way and each by some familiar voice cast members.

Arthur/The Moth (played well by Rob Paulsen) his character really doesn't have any real special powers except flight but that's it. His character is one that has self esteem issues as he's ill confidant, luckless, this is the kind of guy where nothing ever goes right. But he is a person with big dreams that doesn't want to work at a boring job forever or even feel like total crap as his dreams are to be a genuine superhero from going off on adventures to helping people.

Though of course his luck changes for the better, well sort of when the Tick rolls up his doorstep. I really like the back and forth between both, it's sort of a brains and brawns dynamic though also could be superego and id. This dynamic works well, both really are good for each other's lives, from the Tick being able to do only things that Arthur is reluctant to do or can only dream of doing while Arthur keeps The Tick grounded as The Tick at times has very little to no grasp of it.

The Tick another one of my favorite superheroes. You can say if you ever mixed the genes of the Adam West "Batman", the Incredible Hulk, and Homer Simpson you would have this guy. The character is played well by one of my favorite voice actors Townsend Coleman, this is my favorite role from him, really love his vocals which just fit like a glove, every time I read the comic series I think of his voice. The vocals he uses sound like Gary Owens who was famous for voicing a lot of Hanna Barbara superhero characters.

The guy is well a total dim bulb but that's because "The Tick" is more of a doer not a thinker and at least his heart is big and strong just as his physique and super strength are. Really like how at times it's mentioned he doesn't date much, almost brings some psychological reasoning to why he does his superhero work a lot, probably to work out tons of pent-up sexual energy. Though you could say this is a little parody on the fundamental problem of some superheroes that devote most of there time and life to their lifestyle but never have real lives.

The Tick is also enigmatic as we never really know about his origins as he never explains them or may 'be too stupid to remember. Your guess is as good as mine, he could have been some experiment from a government lab that escaped but somehow the government forgot about him or may 'be some sort of alien that came to earth, dressed and disguised as a human but may 'be accidentally turned on some sort of memory and IQ eraser ray which hit him and now romes the city aimlessly. I don't know like I said your guess is as good as mine, but in a strange way that just contributes to the humor is endless enigmatic quality and also make the Tick all the more interesting.

Even though this guy has a brain the size of a tick, let alone lack of love live or any kind of personal life which is very sad, his heart is in the right place which makes him a decent guy and he's always ready for action, on time, buckles down and does what must be done no matter what.

There are even some other superheroes though unfortunately most of them are either useless or cowards which is kind of funny as their walking contradictions, it's as if they just dressed up as superheroes just to simply look cool.

Like one character named Die Fledermaus (voiced by Cam Clarke) whom is a parody on "Batman" who is dressed up like "Batman" but is not even close to his heroic magnitude as he's all talk no action which sort of makes him true to his name as he's one big mouse. He's clearly in the superhero biz for all the wrong reasons and has Don Juan delusions that he can get any girl he wants, probably never occurred to him each of these character flaws are why he keeps getting shot down.

If there is one superhero in the bunch that's useful it's Liberty Maid who is a parody on "Wonder Woman". This is another animated feme fatale I had a crush on when I was a kid (I said I was a kid mind you) just that costume but just love her determined can do attitude, fierce independence, and fire. Like with Wonder Woman she has super strength and as Wonder Woman throws a tierra as one of her weapons, Liberty Maid's weapon is a pump which is surprisingly effective.

I remember thinking somewhere along the line The Tick and her would hook up as both might be a good match as both The Tick and Liberty Maid have three things in common, their devoted to their work and always get the job done while other so-called superheroes don't do jack squat. Have super strength, and both treat each other well as opposed to others that treat both like dirt sometimes. Though this never happens as both keep things platonic which I'm fine with it works all the same. However, the one weakness of the show and even comic series is both never really get to interact enough as Liberty Maid isn't in the show enough, would have been cool if both The Tick and her had a stand-alone episode but that didn't happen either so oh well.

One of the other strengths of the show and I feel true strength is in its dialog which is just fraking hilarious. Some of the things not just the Tick but other characters say can be deliciously bad, strange, colorful, or simply all the above. There is so much verbal humor you might have to watch again just to uncover more of the verbal jokes.

There are just plenty of memorable lines which I can't list as theirs too many, let alone can't do justice writing them down as the kinds you have to hear and see for yourself to believe. Most of them are supplied by "The Tick" of course the most famous line is "Spoon!" I have no idea why the heck he would say that much like everything else he says, it's just so random as if he couldn't figure out a cleaver line at the spur of the moment, so this word just popped into his pea brained head and he just ran with it; well that just my theory yours is as good as mine. But all the same it was just so darn funny because of how random and strange it sounds which kind of reflects part of the The Tick's personal anyway.

Though this show might not be for everyone, if you are into superhero comedies and parodies and even the Weird genre from movies like "Rubber" or TV shows like "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" then this show is for you. But if you not into one or either of those things then this show is probably not going to be your thing.

And remember "SPOON!"

Rocking The City

Justice comes in many forms, and in The Tick it comes in at about 400 pounds in blue tights and wrapped in mixed metaphors.

The Tick is that rare beast -- a cartoon the adults will enjoy as much as the kids. In the tradition of Bullwinkle and the Alf cartoons, The Tick is sophisticated if silly, intellectual if infantile, a one-liner of truth in the hyperinflated monologue of network television. It's... oh, never mind. Watch it and see.

Ah, the Tick. For those of us who were privileged enough to know the Tick before his Saturday Morning debut, this series was a delight. It perfectly captured the demented world of our favorite blue lunatic; and, we finally got to see some of the stuff that Ben Edlund never got around to.

The voice casting was perfect. Townsend Coleman gave Tick the right combination of heroic, but insane. I really preferred Mickey Dolenz to Rob Paulsen as Arthur, but, both were good. The additions of Die Fledermaus and American Maid were superb. The only parts I missed were Oedipus and Paul the Samurai.

This was a series that was too sophisticated for its environment. It didn't really fit in with the Saturday Moning kiddie fare and should have been shown in prime time. Still, it was worth getting up Saturday Morning to catch it.

It's hard to pick a favorite episode, there are so many good ones. A few of the best: Tick vs Tick, Thrakkorzog, Tick in Belgium, the Tick's hero class, and the Brainchild episodes.

Thankfully, this series is about to come out on dvd. Now we can relive those halcyon days. SPOOOOOOONN!!

Best Cartoon Superhero Spoof
Kai-184 August 1999
The Tick is really one of the most hilarious and original cartoons I've seen in a while. It's about a Stupid and clueless but good-hearted Superhero called the Tick (when asked if he could destroy the world he says "Egad, I hope not. That's where I keep all my stuff"). When he moves to The City he meets up with a meek accountant who becomes his sidekick. Based on the Comic book of the same name, the Tick has proven itself repetedly that superhero spoofs still work. Watch it when you can.

This was just a perfect show. It's too bad it appealed almost exclusively to a more mature audience. That is why it was cancelled. To stay on the air on Saturday morning you have to be able to sell toys to kids. If only FOX could have realized that this show could have been a huge success if they placed it in a timeslot that the more mature audience could be the target audience for the commercials.

I thought it was impossible to find cartoons that parents can enjoy as much as (if not more than) the kids. The Tick proved me wrong. I laughed until I cried. Highly literate, The Tick is set in The City, a metropolis overrun with superheroes and villains. See Die Fledermaus, The Civic-Minded Five (yes, they drive a Civic), and American Maid as they battle evil with The Tick and his sidekick Arthur ("I'm not a bunny! I'm a moth!)

This show was great. It was very funny. All the characters were (obviously) reminiscent of the famous DC and Marvel comics characters. Probably what made it so funny. This show was way to short lived and deserved longer time on the air. I look forward to the new live action show that is coming and hope is equals, if not surpasses, this show in quality.

One of the greatest comedies ever!!!

Forget about The Incredibles (SNORE!!!), this is what superhero parody is all about. I think The Tick animated series is even better than the comic book on which it is based.I cannot think of one episode that did not keep moving along rapid-fire with one gag after the other; from the outright absurd to the observational. While the live action series was decent, and is available on DVD, I really wish this version would make its way to us. Only a few videocassettes ever hit the market, and the ones I have are getting old. It's a shame that Fox doesn't seem to want to release this one. I find it especially strange since the live action version sold better than expected on DVD and Fox released the far more obscure Firefly to DVD(another outstanding show that ended prematurely).
