"How about you and I be honest about what each of us want out of this – I want to milk the last ounce of baseball you got in you." Who doesn't love baseball movies?! America's past-time has made for some great cinema, with hundreds of beloved movies over the years dedicated to the sport. There's a baseball movies montage going around social media recently (it's embedded below) posted by the "Baseball History Nut" account saying: "Someone made a baseball movie montage and it actually deserves an Oscar. Thank you to whoever made this." The version posted on Twitter is actually a cut down version of a "Baseball on Film" video created by a YouTube user named "Adam K" that first appeared around 8 years ago. (They're always digging up content from the past.) Even though it may be an older video, still worth a watch. From comedies like Major League and The Sandlot,...

Kevin Costner has starred in several films about baseball, and they're all remarkably different. Both "Bull Durham" and "For Love of the Game" combine romance with America's National Pastime, yet the former is a funny, flirtatious romp that parallels the mechanics of the sport with the rituals of human courtship. The latter, on the other hand, is an elegiac melodrama about the things we prioritize in life and just how hard it is to bid farewell to the life you used to have upon reaching a crossroads.
Phil Alden Robinson's classic "Field of Dreams" exists somewhere at the nexus of those two films, merging a baseball fable with a poignant story about regret but with a fantasy twist. The film, which adapts W. P. Kinsella's 1982 book "Shoeless Joe," casts Costner as Ray Kinsella, an everyman who, like other Boomers, was once a child of '60s counter-culturalism. He's...

In the early 1990s, Sam Raimi was a low-budget horror maestro who'd made the leap to studio filmmaking without sacrificing his gonzo visual style. Riding high off the commercial success of 1990's "Darkman," a deliriously fun and funky comic-book riff that still stands as one of the best superhero movies ever made, Raimi could pretty much call his shot. So he did. And that's how Universal Pictures bankrolled the third installment of a horror series that most people had never heard of, let alone seen.
The ending of "Evil Dead 2," which dropped the modern-day hero of the first two, tenuously linked movies, in the Middle Ages was an unexpected howler of a punchline. Under no circumstances did I expect Raimi would actually make a third movie set in medieval times. That would be expensive. And silly. But if you could suddenly afford to make an expensively silly movie, would you not?...

When Brad Pitt, as Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane in the 2011 modern classic “Moneyball,” rhetorically asked, “How can you not be romantic about baseball,” he wasn’t talking about the inevitability of love and sports colliding. “Bull Durham” this was not. What Billy was referring to (via Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian’s script) was the sentimental wish-fulfillment America’s pasttime so often and so easily lends itself to realizing. He may as well have asked, “How can you not dream?” For even when those dreams are dashed, as Billy’s were time and time again, the sport known for guaranteeing three tries per at-bat is thus the one most encouraging of idealism, of myth-making, of hope.
Prime Video’s series, “A League of Their Own,” despite being inspired by Penny Marshall’s iconic 1992 film of the same name, may share more in common with Billy’s encouraging...

We are dropped en multiverse res: Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is running through a Ditko-esque geometric cosmos filled with runes and floating rock fragments, perfect for leaping away from danger. A young woman in a star-spangled jean jacket is sprinting right beside him. A raging, fiery demon is in literal hot pursuit, a not-uncommon occurrence when you’re the Master of the Mystic Arts. Only this Stephen Strange has a ponytail (!), which means either that we’re dealing with one of a gajillion alt-versions of the Avenger’s in-house sorcerer,...

Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy changed superhero movies forever, as the concept of a major movie with comic book origins was not a sure thing in the early 2000s. And Raimi, at the time, may have felt like an odd choice for the character -- he was best known as the creator of the "Evil Dead" franchise, as well as films like "A Simple Plan," "The Gift," and "For the Love of the Game." Of course, there's 1990's "Darkman," Raimi's very own, delightfully twisted rendition of a superhero film (which heavily departed from established superhero trappings).
However, when Sony Pictures was looking for a director to helm the first "Spider-Man," Raimi...

Though it would take three decades for “Being the Ricardos” writer-director Aaron Sorkin to cast J.K. Simmons in something Sorkin wrote, the filmmaker well remembers when the urge first came to him.
“He was an understudy in my first play ‘A Few Good Men,’ back in 1990,” Sorkin told IndieWire of the now widely esteemed actor, “And I got a call from the stage manager just to alert me that he was going on at a Wednesday matinee, so I ran to the theater. I wanted to catch his performance, understudying the role that Jack Nicholson played in the movie. He just blew the roof off the theater, a full house on Broadway went crazy. And I knew after his first scene, ‘This guy is a star. Keep your eye on him, keep yourself handcuffed to him.'”

As an actress, Kelly Preston, who died Sunday at 57, was the soul of likability, and that’s no small thing. When she showed up in a movie, she lit it up; she also grounded it. (She had an earthly radiance.) Just think of the scene in “For Love of the Game” where she meets Kevin Costner’s aw-shucks baseball pitcher. Her rental car is stalled by the side of the road, and he stops to help her, all shaggy jockish gallantry. It’s a meet-cute moment, though the offhand way that Preston bristles at being rescued lends it a contemporary vivacity. Then, this being a traditional (and actually rather good) Hollywood movie, he melts her resistance. Just as she has already melted his. The audience melts too.

In the surest sign yet that America now prefers the barbarism of football to the poetry of baseball, Hollywood’s most reliable seamhead has forsaken America’s pastime for the game that gave us Brett Favre’s penis. Yet despite his switch in Draft Day comes out today, Costner remains the same. He’s that same stubborn sage he’s played so many times before, dropping knowledge about games like the Confucius of the bleachers. We collected all that wisdom for you below:As Marcus Sommers, a bicycle racing doctor with a death wish in American Flyers. As Crash Davis, an aging minor league catcher in Bull Durham. As Roy McAvoy, a heavy drinking and bad tempered golf pro in Tin Cup. As Billy Chapel, a star pitcher in the twilight of his career in For Love of the Game.

Animated sequel Rio 2 could cruise to around $40 million this weekend, which would put it in a close race for first place against Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Draft Day and Oculus are targeting more modest debuts.Captain America: The Winter Soldier set an April record last weekend with $95 million. Most comic book movies fall hard in their second weekends: similar movies Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World fell 58 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Captain America has better reviews and stronger word-of-mouth, though it would still be surprising if it dropped less than 50 percent. Playing at 3,948 locations, Rio 2 could give the Captain a run for its money. The first Rio opened to $39.2 million around the same time in 2011, and ultimately closed with a solid $143.6 million. While it was well-liked enough, its reputation doesn't seem to suggest a huge bump for the sequel.Rio 2 shifts the action...

Here we go with another installment of my Spotlight on the Stars series. Each week, I’ll look at an actor/actress/filmmaker that I’d like to celebrate in some kind of a way. It could be due to something of theirs coming out that weekend (like last week and this week, for example) or just because I feel they deserve to have a moment in the sun, but each time it’ll be a bit of positivity about someone who I’d like to pay tribute to. For this week’s piece (number three overall so far), I wanted to take a look at our first male actor…Kevin Costner. Some see him as a bit of a has been, but I disagree and not only still see a movie star, but an underrated actor as well. Costner is a throwback to an older generation of actor. Very...

Carmine Giovinazzo (CSI: NY) and Jon Sklaroff (24, Life) have landed recurring roles on USA Network‘s police drama Graceland. Giovinazzo will play Sid Markham, the head of Lapd’s Gang Task Force. Sid is more mind than muscle and uses his intelligence and ability to read people as a way to build relationships and close cases — but that doesn’t mean he’s not prone to acts of violence here and there. Briggs (Daniel Sunjata) grows close to him, seeing Sid as a helpful tool in taking down a cartel. Sklaroff will play Fritz, who has has made his living in the vilest way possible: through human trafficking. He uses intimidation and brutality to keep “his property” in line. Kevin Costner is the "All-American Man" and the world loves him for it.
From "Dances with Wolves" to "The Untouchables" to "JFK," one simply needs to watch Costner's filmography to capture the essence of America and understand its past. Let's face it, the man stars in Westerns and baseball-related movies like he's contractually obligated.
It all started over 30 years ago, when Costner got his first break in Lawrence Kasdan's "The Big Chill" and, while his part was eventually cut, the director didn't forget him. After getting cast in Kasdan's next project, "Silverado" -- a Western, of course -- the actor's career took off and helped make him the international talent he is today.
Even if you're familiar with Costner's work, there's still some mystery about the well-established actor. From his surreal encounter with Richard Burton to his musical endeavors, here are 17 things you probably don't know about Kevin Costner.

From his modest start in that ramshackle cabin in the woods what must seem like a lifetime ago, Sam Raimi has become one of the more versatile and beloved directors in Hollywood. With Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Darkman today, we bring you our Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise.
We're going to keep this list to films directed by Raimi. If we were to include the movies he's acted in, or god forbid produced, we'd be here all night. But a few of his production credits like 30 Days of Night, both of The Grudge films, Boogeyman, The Possession, Timecop and of course the Evil Dead remake are noteworthy.
Some honorable directorial mentions include his most recent, Oz the Great and Powerful. It might not have been the epic it was billed to be, but it looked fantastic; and when you manage to haul in half a billion...

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
Then there was The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers' sublime comedy that has since become a deserved and oft-quoted cult favourite.

1) Jimmy Muir (When Saturday Comes, 1996)
Football has never really lent itself to the silver screen. Somehow things just don't work – the movement is too forced, the celebrations too cartoonish, the plots too hackneyed, the acting too stilted, the need to get a few real-life players in there (for some reason) too hard to resist. When Saturday Comes is no different. The football scenes don't work, the plot would've been turned down by Boy's Own for being too far-fetched, and Mel Sterland and Tony Currie pop up and make Ally McCoist look like Robert De Niro. The climax should be pretty clear before the opening titles have ended.
If you're expecting an "And yet …" at this point, think again. You can't dress this up as a moment of cinematic brilliance any more...

Will the just-released 42 have the most successful opening weekend for a baseball movie? Writer-director Brian Helgeland's 42, which features Chadwick Boseman as baseball player Jackie Robinson and veteran Harrison Ford, whose credits range from The Conversation and Star Wars in the 1970s to the more recent Cowboys & Aliens, debuted with an estimated $9.1 million at 3,003 locations this past Friday, April 12, as per studio figures found on the web site Box Office Mojo. (Almost) undeboutedly, 42 will end up grossing between $25 million and $26 million by Sunday evening. If that does indeed happen, the film will boast the best debut weekend ever for a movie about baseball -- well, sort of. Pictured above: Ford, looking remarkably different under heavy makeup, plays Brooklyn Dodgers' team executive Branch Rickey in Helgeland's movie. Well, if you dwell on a planet where inflation is as real as the plots of Hollywood films -- including those based on real-life events,...

From The Evil Dead to the Spider–Man trilogy, Sam Raimi is the self–taught film nerd who followed the Yellow Brick Road all the way to Disney

"The Quick and the Dead," a somewhat forgettable 1995 Western starring Sharon Stone, isn't exactly the first movie in director Sam Raimi's filmography that would be thought of as career-changing.
At the time, Raimi was already the director of the cult favorites "Evil Dead II" and "Darkman." As he explained to HuffPost, he was so unhappy with his experience on "The Quick and the Dead" that it led him to smaller, character-driven movies, like "A Simple Plan" and "For Love of the Game." Perhaps it's no wonder, then, that his blockbuster series of Spider-Man films were later lauded for character development.
Raimi's latest is this weekend's new release, Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful," starring James Franco as the wizard. "Oz" is a prequel of sorts to "The Wizard of Oz," though the production had to avoid any reference -- any reference! -- to events that occur in the 1939 film...

After the success of Sam Raimi's trilogy of Spider-Man films, it seemed like a no-brainer that the series would continue, considering everyone involved seemed willing to do so. The problem was, reportedly, that Sony wanted a 2011 release date and Raimi felt he couldn't deliver a quality product before that date. The fourth "Spider-Man" was canceled, replaced with a 2012 reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man," directed by Marc Webb.
On Sunday, we spoke to Raimi who is promoting his new film, "Oz: The Great and Powerful." (The full interview will publish closer to the film's March 8 release.) It's been a good year for Kevin Costner. Not only did Hatfield & McCoys perform very well in the ratings, but the History miniseries also earned itself numerous Emmy nominations this week, including one for Costner in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries category for his portrayal of "Devil" Anse Hatfield in the three-part miniseries. When he isn't wielding a shotgun for a role, Costner's made a name for himself in various features, many of which were sports-related (Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, American Flyers and For Love of the Game to name a few). So this latest bit of casting news for Disney and Mayhem Pictures' drama McFarland seems like somewhat familiar territory in that respect. Variety reports that Costner is in final negotiations to star in McFarland, a Niki Caro directed movie based on a true story about a high school coach who settles into McFarland, California, a...

There are many threads in the career of Kevin Costner -- westerns for example -- but one genre the actor seems to enjoy is the sports movie. From baseball ("Bull Durham," "Field Of Dreams," "For Love Of The Game") to golf ("Tin Cup") to boxing ("Play It To The Bone" in which he cameos), if you've got a sport, send it Costner's way, because he might be interested. And now, he's going out for track. The actor has joined "McFarland," the next effort from "Whale Rider" director Niki Caro, who signed on to the movie last fall. The film is based on the true story of a coach in the small, predominantly Latino town of McFarland, California, during the 1980s, who turned a track team into champions. Coming from Disney and the producers that brought you “Invincible,” “The Rookie” and “Secretariat,” the tone of this one should be pretty apparent.

Simon salutes the sterling work of Kevin Costner in a list of the 10 best films of his career so far. “Let’s do some good”…
It’s a topic we seem to return to on an annual basis at Den Of Geek, and we’re firm believers with an ‘on with the tradition’ philosophy here. But, of all the movie stars who have risen and fallen over the past few decades, have any had quite as much of an eye for a good risk, or taking a chance, as Kevin Costner?
It’s testament to his body of work just going through some of his quality films that didn’t make the following run-down of his top ten movies. For Love Of The Game is a woefully underrated baseball movie, for instance, while there’s a lot to like in Mr Brooks, too. And you’ll notice the almost-criminal omission...

Moneyball was released this weekend, but is it one of the five best baseball movies ever?
Moneyball is a Brad Pitt movie based on Michael Lewis's book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, about the Oakland Athletics team and how its general manager Billy Beane used sabermetrics to change the team's fortunes. (Or not, but you need to watch the movie or know the story). Moneyball the movie was released in the Us this weekend and with an Aaron Sorkin script (West Wing, The Social Network, and Sports Night, possibly the best fictional TV show about sport, but that's another debate) has mostly received rave reviews. The promotional material describes it as "one of the greatest baseball movies ever made", but is it one of the best five?
